JLC Construction T T Virginia Wright BUILDING Christchurch-based JLC Construction is celebrateing its fifth anniversary, marking a remarkable journey since it was established by Joshua Lee. What began as a one-man operation has grown into a thriving construction company with a 19-strong team led by Josh, with the support of general manager Tammy Gordon, who joined in early 2023. Josh’s construction career started straight out of school with an apprenticeship, setting the foundation for a dynamic path in the industry. After qualifying as a builder, he moved to Perth at 21, rapidly advancing to a management role on large commercial projects. This experience significantly expanded his skill set. Returning to Christchurch in 2013, Josh worked with a friend specialising in high-end architectural builds, gaining valuable insights into running a construction business. Later, he joined a top-tier company, contributing to anchor projects in the Christchurch rebuild, including project managing a section of the Town Hall restoration. When Josh was 31, an existing client recognised his potential and encouraged him to start his own company. He established JLC Construction in early 2020, just before the challenges of Covid-19. Low overheads and essential contracts, such as maintaining emergency services and supermarket maintenance, helped the fledgling business navigate uncertain times. As the construction industry rebounded, opportunities began to flow. “We secured projects across commercial and architectural sectors, and that diversity became a strong foundation for our growth,” Josh says. “He’s good at placing the right people in the right places, which is important too,” adds Tammy. “When the company has a growth spurt, you need the right staff with the right range of skills, because we’re still diverse in the range of projects we do. We’re both pretty good judges of character and have the same concept of looking after good staff,” says Josh. Tammy also praises Josh for his leadership: “Josh is a great boss to work for and a well-rounded businessman. His passion for the work and his drive to deliver the best outcomes inspires the team to always go the extra mile. He’s created an environment where everyone feels valued and part of the company’s vision.” The company’s commitment to nurturing talent is evident in its approach to apprenticeships. With five apprentices on the team, JLC Construction focuses on providing strong support and varied opportunities to help apprentices grow into skilled builders. “We encourage our apprentices to develop a wide range of skills,” Josh explains. “Some apprentices only gain narrow experiences; we ensure they rotate across different sites so they can become well-rounded builders prepared for any challenge.” JLC Construction’s diverse portfolio highlights its adaptability and expertise. From high-end architectural homes to commercial unit developments, industrial strengthening projects, and commercial design-and-build ventures, the team tackles projects that demand a skilled and motivated workforce. This flexibility reflects their commitment to being a company that both clients and employees hold in high regard. “Anyone can build to a certain level,” Josh explains, “but we aim to be the company that stands out – a team people want to work with and work for.” This vision has fuelled the company’s growth and reputation. By delivering projects of all shapes and sizes on time and within budget, JLC Construction continues to earn trust and expand its footprint in the construction industry. With a focus on quality, teamwork, and client satisfaction, Josh is steering the company towards a bright future.
