For Camako Builders owner Nick Jordan, precision post-and-beam timber frame construction speaks more of heart and art than of merely being an alternative construction method. “I’m in it to build houses for awesome clients who want a home to love,” Nick says. Although destined to be a builder from a young age, it was Nick’s international journey in the industry that had a huge impact on him, and that’s manifested in the beautiful homes he and his team of four love to craft for their clients. The Camako team specialises in mid- to high-end new builds, with both conventional ‘stick’ framing, and post-and-beam homes that have structural timber with mortice and tenon joins and dovetail joists seated into place with oak pegs. These can be built to look either rustic or with a high level of finish, or anywhere in between. After completing his apprenticeship in Christchurch with a notable architectural building company, Nick worked in Canada for five years for a company specialising in timber-frame homes and interior timber finishes, costing CAD $4 million to $12 million. “We did some pretty incredible homes over there.” Having settled back in New Zealand in Queenstown, Nick brings his expertise to residential clients with an ethos of combining detail-oriented, quality builds with a care-based approach to construction of both conventional builds and post-and-beam houses. Nick’s love of old-school construction is not one-eyed. He believes conventional construction methods in New Zealand are inefficient, and this has led him to innovate with both old and new in building his own home, incorporating Heritage Timbercraft timber posts and beams, but cladding with SelectSIP expanded polystyrene panels that have magnesium fibre cement sheathing. “It is the first time in New Zealand that these two systems have been brought together,” Nick says. The SelectSIP panels feature an assembly process that minimises skill requirements, labour times, and process sequences in both manufacturing and onsite delivery processes, as well as the interior sheathing surface being immediately paintable. Additionally, multiple panels can be prefabricated into structural, load-bearing sections that make up the building envelope, ready to be craned and installed on site, and it is this process Nick is developing into a separate business. He estimates modular construction using SIPs panels to prefabricate the building envelope will reduce the build time by about 40%. “What the Heritage Timbercraft timber frame provides for your dollar is a structure, and what the SIP provides is it can provide your structure, insulation, your rigid air barrier, your E2 (building code) moisture barrier, and with the SelectSIP system, it acts as your internal lining. “Over the last couple of years I’ve come to the realisation that the techniques and We offer a comprehensive range of painting services, specializing in new builds and repaints, including everything from spray application to custom special effects.
