BUILDING Ashburton’s Matt Smith Construction is building quality homes and happy memories across Mid-Canterbury with a customer-centric approach that helps people move enjoyably through the build process and into their dream home with no setbacks and no budget blowouts. “Right from the start, we make sure we know what’s most important to our clients so we can help them to navigate all the critical decision-making points of the process,” Matt says. “We’re a tight-knit team with a wide range of expertise and a great network of trusted subcontractors. “From design to build and every little detail in between, we’re right by their side to help create a home that works for their family and lifestyle.” As well as a strong client base, Matt has built a strong team, which he says is his biggest asset. Foreman Mark has been with Matt since the beginning. With a similar work ethic, he’s a stickler for detail and high standards. He likes to create the best- possible product and make it work for the client. Builder Liam is the champion of the team. An all-round nice guy with a bubbly personality and great sense of humour, he keeps morale up on the job site while delivering quality results. Kieran is the third qualified builder in Matt’s team, and has been with the team for three years. He has a keen eye for the intricate details involved in many of today’s plans and specifications, ensuring nothing is missed. Apprentice Charlotte has recently joined the team and is proving her worth, if not her strength. “She’s pretty small but she gives everything 100%,” Matt says. “Her point of difference is her attention to detail, so we’re pushing her into that where she can really shine.” As well as his team out on site, Matt has Wal and Grant building house frames and trusses on a contract basis, for one of the local building suppliers. The next big architectural project for the team is the build of Matt and wife Sarah’s own home on their substantial 20-acre property. This is where the couple train racehorses, and until now they have been focused on developing horse-related facilities. “We’ve done everything we can for them, now it’s our turn,” says Matt. The plan, by Jonathan Moore of Moore Architecture, is for a dream home that incorporates as many as possible of the ideas Matt has seen and earmarked during his construction career. “The problem with being a builder is you see so many cool ideas and you can’t fit them all in,” he says. “We got Jonathan involved and within about an hour he’d come up with a great first sketch, which we based everything off from then on.” The 330sqm home comprises a fullfloor master suite on the upper level, while everything else is downstairs. Matt has specified boxed-in ceilings and Classic Stone cladding with Rockcote plaster. “We have built with Classic Stone before and loved it, but choosing the rest of the cladding was tough, because there are so many options. “I didn’t want two different claddings on each level, and bricking the top storey would have added too much time and cost. Rockcote was the way to go.” Matt is using a shingle tile from Gerard Roofs for its wonderful aesthetic. As a first- time client, he hopes this will be the start of a long-term relationship. Matt and Sarah have trained plenty of winning racehorses, and having a way to celebrate this success was an important part of their dream home. So they have added a bar/sports room, where they can display their winning photos and keep adding to them as the wins stack up. - PROUDLY SUPPORTING MATT SMITH CONSTRUCTION
