| 127 RPC Construction BUILDING Old school approach a winner RPC Construction has a raft of highly successful projects behind it. T T Hugh de Lacy An old-school construction company, and proud of it, Christchurch’s RPC Construction’s emphasis on collaboration with the client, early designer and contractor engagement, and planning ahead to minimise contract variations, are what has earned it its glowing reputation, according to co-owner Stefan Jesperson. “We’re not a huge business, but we punch above our weight, providing a good-quality service for good people. We’ve got a direct staff of 14, including foremen, carpenters and apprentices, with two more tradesmen arriving in the New Year, working on projects in both the commercial and residential sectors,” Stefan says. “RPC carries out light commercial and residential projects up to about $10 million, and virtually anything in the way of carpentry and concrete work that the client wants.” With a raft of highly successful projects behind it – RFPC Construction’s testimonials and repeat business speak volumes for the company’s standing in the Garden City – it has some exciting current and pending projects lined up for 2025.. True to its founder’s fondness for complex and challenging projects, RPC Construction recently completed an office block inside an existing building for Flexi-Lease. “It was a steel and concrete structure entirely within an existing building,” Stefan says. “The existing floor levels and services had the potential for all sorts of complications, but we worked closely with the project team to deliver the project on time and budget, with a happy client at the end.” RPC Construction was formed 20 years ago by businessman and entrepreneur Russel Pitt, and went on to make a name for itself in the repair, strengthening and rebuilding of commercial buildings in Christchurch following the quakes. “He was really strong on taking this collaborative approach with clients; he drew them into the day-to-day decision-making, helped them understand the process and made everything transparent,” Stefan says. By the time Russel retired in 2023, the company had broadened its scope to new commercial and upmarket residential projects, though it still takes on quake-related rebuilding and strengthening work. On his retirement, Russel sold the company to Stefan and his business partner Daniel Trenberth. They each have more than 20 years’ construction industry experience behind them, Stefan having completed his cadetship in the Tier One sector with giant, Fletcher Construction on vertical construction. Daniel has been with RPC Construction his entire time in the industry, starting as an apprentice under Russel and going on to increasingly responsible jobs over the succeeding two decades. “The company’s approach has always been one of collaboration with the client, the designers and the contractors, consciously looking for potential problems well in advance, then talking with the client about how to mitigate these risks to achieve the best outcome for all,” Stefan says. As a company, RPC Construction was always committed to bringing new talent into the industry through the apprenticeship system. “We usually have three apprentices and we hire them directly so they’ve got full-time access to the experience of senior tradesmen, some of whom have 30 years’ experience behind them,” he says. → Roofing • New Roofs • Re-roofing • Concrete Tiles • Metal Tiles • Longrun → Bricks → Scaffold & Edge Protection Residential Renovations Commercial Retro Double Glazing PROUD SUPPLIER OF ALUMNIUM JOINERY TO RPC CONSTRUCTION 0800 BEST WINDOWS INFO@FAIRVIEWCONCEPTS.CO.NZ Commercial and residential painting.
