REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT As one of several resort properties in the award-winning Robertson Lodges collection, Queenstown’s Matakauri Lodge has long been synonymous with refinement and warm hospitality. In 2025, this luxury lodge is more enticing than ever, with a recent upgrade having delivered an impressive outdoor relaxation area that includes a new ‘best in class’ swimming pool and expansive decks overlooking Lake Wakatipu. Since the end of 2023, the lodge has been under the management of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, which has a global collection of one-of-a-kind luxury hotels, resorts and residences. Embracing a trademark ‘Sense of Place’ philosophy, Rosewood’s commitment is to expand the horizons of ultra-luxury travel. The outdoor makeover at Rosewood Matakauri perfectly demonstrates that commitment. Along with a new custom stainless steel swimming pool, there is enhanced decking and other new amenities that deliver a true resort-style experience. “You can now spend the afternoon in the pool or relaxing on your sun lounger under an umbrella with your cocktail,” says James Cavanagh, director of sales, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. “There’s a new hot tub up on an elevated section, plus a cold plunge, both sharing the same interior aesthetic as the pool. “Our new outdoor glass-fronted sauna is in the same area as the hot tub with spectacular views. Rosewood Matakauri is all about capturing that alpine landscape, being immersed in the view, surrounded by mountains and with the lake right in front of you.” After a day’s skiing, or a day of wine touring, jumping into a hot tub under the stars will be a tempting option for many guests, while the wellness area at the lodge includes an existing gym as well as spa treatment rooms to rejuvenate body and mind. Rosewood Matakauri’s director of operations, David Barbero, says having the additional outdoor facilities has expanded the breadth of the whole offering for guests. “Something we are also looking into for 2025 is offering day guest packages, so local residents and Queenstown visitors can enjoy the wellness experience here too,” he says. The upgraded outdoor area provides a stunning platform for hosting canape and cocktail events or for exploring local food and wine. “During the peak season, we have activities on a daily basis to further enhance the guest experience, such as culinary classes, mixologist classes, and walks down to the bay.” Cook Brothers Construction delivered the outdoor upgrade, with the project completed in October 2024. “Cook Brothers are wellknown here and we had a good relationship with them throughout – they’ve done a great job,” David says. Around half the guests are from North America, with the others being from Australia, New Zealand, UK/Europe, and a mix of other countries. Rosewood Matakauri has 12 suites plus two- or four-bedroom lake-view villa options, comprising 16 rooms in total.
