REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Timaru Boys High School is set to breathe new life into its library with a significant renovation project that promises to modernise an important learning space for students. The project, scheduled for completion in mid-2025, involves two primary components: re-roofing the existing library, and replacing a problematic extension that has long been plagued by structural issues. “From a school perspective, libraries are important buildings in schools,” says Dave Thorp, the school rector. “Their core purpose as a repository of knowledge has changed somewhat due to the rise of the internet. However, it is still a place that champions the arts, especially written fiction – storytellers are important to every culture.” He emphasises that the library is far more than a book repository. “It is our best presentation and meeting space, ideal for small performances, where we teach our ESOL classes for ex-refugees, and a social place for students to gather.” Rod Sparrow, school liaison on the project, agrees: “It’s a learning hub. There will be a number of learning spaces attached to the library, and we think it will be a great improvement.” Rod says the existing library suffered from a flat roof with a bitumen surface that had been leaking, and a previous extension compounded water-ingress problems. Work commenced in 2023 with the design phase, with construction beginning late in 2024. NB Architects, a local architectural firm with previous experience working on school projects, has been instrumental in designing the renovation. The firm has previously completed projects including classroom renovations, toilet block upgrades, and gymnasium roof replacements. It redesigned the library roof to include a pitch, ensuring more effective water runoff. He says the school maintains strong relationships with local contractors, which has hugely assisted outcomes. “We have a very good working relationship with Timaru Construction and NB Architects,” says Rod.
