REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Hunter Civil has demonstrated its exceptional work in the construction industry, securing multiple awards at the 2024 Canterbury Westland Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Awards and reinforcing its position as a leading infrastructure solutions provider in Aotearoa. Hunter Civil won Most Progressive Company along with the Innovation Award (which it won in 2023 as well), and Category D for projects over $5 million. It also received highly commended recognition in Category C for projects between $500,000 and $2.5 million, and $2.5 million to $5 million, emphasising its comprehensive capabilities across various project scales. “On all our projects we take an innovative approach right from tender to understanding the risks, and how best to manage these, as well as opportunities for innovation. These awards also reflect the exceptional capabilities of our team,” says Bryce Moir, chief executive officer at Hunter Civil. The Nelson wastewater pump station construction project, which clinched the top honour in the over $5 million category, showcased Hunter Civil’s ability to navigate complex technical challenges. Undertaken for Nelson City Council, the project involved constructing a sophisticated nine-metre-deep pump station at the edge of Nelson Airport, with strict operational height restrictions. The project included not only the primary pump station construction, but also the installation of a new control building, two large storage tanks, detailed mechanical and electrical works and pipe reticulation. Bryce says the team successfully constructed the new pump station and pipework whilst maintaining operations of the two existing pump stations; this was critical to ensure services were maintained to the local residents. The integration of the new system with the existing pump stations required detailed planning and execution to transition over to the new pump station, which then enabled the existing aged pump stations to be decommissioned, demonstrating high levels of engineering precision. Two projects for Christchurch City Council demonstrated Hunter Civil’s multifaceted capabilities. The Diamond Harbour wharf upgrade and pontoon construction project, which received a highly commended award in the $2.5-$5 million category involved complex operations such as marine piling work. This was completed using a 65-tonne crane on a 500-tonne self-propelled barge and pre-casting concrete pontoon units in Lyttelton Harbour dry dock before carefully towing and installing them. Bryce says the project required high levels of coordination, working closely with ferry operators, and public and private stakeholders to minimise service disruption. One unique advantage that Hunter Civil was able to provide the client was its very own qualified marine mammal observer, which was required to monitor marine life during piling works. The Bridle Path retaining wall construction in Lyttelton, the highly commended project in the $500,000 to $2.5 million category, further illustrated Hunter Civil’s expertise in post-earthquake infrastructure restoration. The project involved rebuilding an earthquake-damaged retaining wall, which required sophisticated engineering solutions to enable access, while protecting existing properties below. his included an engineered staging platform to support its excavator to enable the boring and installation of steel piles cast six to eight metres underground to enhance safety for workers and stakeholders. Bryce says the company’s success can be partly attributed to the distinctive organisational culture Hunter Civil has cultivated that emphasises collaboration, diversity and individual empowerment.
