While many companies in the residential building sector are struggling nationwide, Mataura-based Adam Newton Homes is busier than ever. Owner Adam Newton attributes this buoyancy to the company diversifying into transportable homes three years ago, along with a strong focus on marketing, while the State Highway 1 location is also great for drawing impromptu enquiries. “Every transportable home we do will garner quite a bit of interest, and we have people swing in and have a look through. It’s a great way of advertising as well; it’s a high-visibility site.” Adam Newton Homes offers two-, three- and four-bedroom transportable homes from 60sqm to 140sqm across five plans with the ability to create larger homes by design, in addition to bespoke new builds. Adam diversified into transportable homes about three years ago after he saw a gap in the market in the region, with a particular focus on offering homes built to a higher than usual specification. “I identified a gap in the market towards custom, tailor-made [transportables] rather than a cookie-cutter design. We value the end product as being of a higher standard than what other companies typically offer.” Options include choosing a standard design with minimal modifications, or customising and choosing the type of claddings, fit-out and appliances to the level the client desires. Adam took the opportunity to showcase one of the homes, the 95sqm, three-bedroom Totara plan, at last year’s Southern Field Days at Waimumu. “That was really well received and it was a very good opportunity to get our product in front of probably six to seven thousand people, who came through over the three days.” Building the transportables on Adam Newton Homes’’ site in Mataura means there are efficiencies in the building process, plus the cost per square metre is typically less than what is currently charged in places such as Central Otago. Despite transportable homes being relatively new, production is gaining momentum and will potentially double this year, Adam says. With this workload, in addition to building new homes, the business is well-resourced with a staff of 15. This includes administration and project-management staff supporting seven builders, with five apprentices at various stages of their training. The demand for both the transportable homes, as well as new builds, saw five new staff being employed last year during what has been a very challenging time for many companies. “We definitely are very aware of the climate, but in saying that I’ve pushed pretty hard to where I wanted to take the business to, and that’s on the back of really good word-ofmouth referrals and client satisfaction – that’s invaluable. I would like to think that our service and the product that we deliver is the reason why we are so busy.” Further cementing this focus on quality and service, Adam Newton Homes became a member of Registered Master Builders Association September last year, with the additional benefit of providing clients its 10 year Master Build Guarantee, along with the opportunity to enter House of the Year competitions.
