56 | Workshop drives expansion Trinder Engineers owns the independently operated sister company Waimea Engineering that specialises in heavy transport design and manufacture. ENGINEERING Trinder Engineers “We’ve been working very hard for that. Nelson is one of the largest sea ports and fishing industries in the Southern hemisphere. We are well positioned there – it’s amazing what’s going on in the region.” Trinder Engineers’ design team includes staff with high-level tertiary qualifications such as doctorates and masters degrees, while many staff on the trade side are well-qualified and highly skilled in their areas of speciality. The company typically employs around 19 apprentices, and its commitment to training and to the wider industry includes providing summer work experience for University of Canterbury students studying mechanical engineering. Trinder’s focus on innovation has resulted in designing and manufacturing equipment such as sprayers and other equipment for tractor repairs and spares used in horticulture and viticulture. “They are big in New Zealand and export to Australia, and more recently Canada, and are trying to get back into the United States.” Unique to Trinder is its proprietary WASP branded mechanically operated chain thrower and tensioner developed for logging trucks. Trinder Engineers owns the independently operated sister company Waimea Engineering that specialises in heavy transport design and manufacture – consequently there is some synergy between the two businesses. Trinder Engineering previously partnered with multi-national company Warratah, which has strong New Zealand links, for several years, and while this arrangement has changed, at the time it represented a breakthrough to partner with an international company. Trinder’s new workshop will be a vital key in expanding the business, but not necessarily in terms of a greater volume of work and staff numbers, Kerry says. “We are looking for technology advances (software and equipment) that we can use to increase our productivity. It’s essentially about looking at our processes, our equipment and upskilling”.
