St Thomas Estate DEVELOPMENT If there was ever an opportunity to settle in a magnificently beautiful part of the South Island, relaxing in a peaceful environment, just 45 minutes from the playground of Queenstown, St Thomas Estate in Northern Southland must be it. Encompassing 8000sqm on the eastern side of the township of Garston, St Thomas Estate is a residential development that offers eight generous sections and an abundance of opportunity. The slightly elevated site offers views up the valley, along with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including Hector Range and the Eyre Mountains. The positioning also ensures optimum sunlight and daylight hours. The development is being undertaken by husband-and-wife team James and Lizette McNamee. “We think it is a wonderful development,” says Lizette. “The key features are really the natural beauty of the surrounding area and what Garston has to offer. Garston is notable for the Mataura River, internationally renowned for its brown trout fishing. The Around the Mountains Cycle Trail passes through the township, and there is the Welcome Rock cycle trail.” Raised in Garston, James has always been passionate about keeping the town and its community going. Lizette says the vision behind St Thomas Estate is to help support the Garston lifestyle; an enviable lifestyle that perhaps harks back to a bygone age that embraces a rural community spirit, wide open spaces and a connection to the outdoors. “Hopefully, St Thomas Estate will create a community for people wishing to settle in a beautiful part of the South Island and embrace that wonderful lifestyle. There has been growing demand for residential land in the area, and St Thomas Estate will create new opportunities for people to live and work in the area,” says Lizette. “There really isn’t anywhere else to build a house, unless you have a farm, so it will enable people to return to the Garston area – people who used to live in Garston, children who want to return to their roots, elderly who want to retire there. The development might also appeal to someone wanting a holiday home in the region. It will be a place where you can build an affordable home within the proximity of Queenstown, while still within the Southland District Council’s jurisdiction.” While the development has been a longheld dream, construction of the road commenced in March of 2024 and has now been completed. “Sections are all in that 800sqm range, enabling people to enjoy a lifestyle environment in a truly beautiful part of the South Island,” says Lizette. “Power will be supplied early in 2025 and street lighting installed. Each section owner will be responsible for their own services, including septic tank. Water will be by rain collection. One section has already been sold and we hope to get titles in the first quarter of 2025.” Planning, survey work and road design was completed by Queenstown-based civil engineering, surveying and land development specialists Maven. Fulton Hogan was engaged as lead contractor for civil and construction, supported by a number of local subcontractors.
