CONTRACTING Beaver Contractors Now into its second generation of family ownership, Queenstown’s Beaver Contractors continues to deliver on the meaningful relationships it has built up over more than 30 years, and contribute to projects that provide value to the local community. Beaver Contractors was established by Queenstown local Grant Hensman in 1994. Starting out with one truck and one digger, Grant grew his business with a proficient and reliable team that manages intricate civil works. Through its extensive involvement in the community, and involvement in a diverse range of projects, from new housing, and new infrastructure, to new native forests, Beaver Contractors is known as a reputable and dependable company, providing quality work. Grant’s son-in-law, former onsite physiotherapist for the construction industry Garth Lawrence, joined the business in 2018. He spent the next few years learning the business from the ground up, working in every role from earthworks to drainage and roading, before moving into a management role for the past couple of years. He bought the business at the beginning of 2024. “It’s been an education,” Garth says. “I’ve been exposed to the civil construction industry in my former role, and now I’ve got on-the-tools experience to pair with it. I really enjoy this industry. It makes you feel like you’re part of the world.” Garth is now working on the efficiencies of Beaver Contractors’ business, and says finding and retaining very experienced staff has always been tough in Queenstown, so making a great place to work is at the forefront of his response, as well as developing the team he has around him. “One of the great things about Beaver Contractors is we have people who have worked for us for five, 10, and 20 years. There are people in this business who want to take the next step up, and I’m giving them that opportunity.” Beaver Contractors’ relationships with its clients are equally important, and are maintained via a proven work ethic and quality results. With its speciality in subdivisions, Beaver Contractors is a trusted partner for local developers, as well as for Queenstown Lakes District Council, Skyline Queenstown, and local water infrastructure provider Veolia. “We just feel like we’re part of the world,” Garth says. “The way I view the work is ‘service above yourself’, and that’s the driving motivation for me. We believe in providing a service that’s of value not only to our clients, but to the community as well.” Beaver Contractors, and the construction industry in genera,l provides meaningful infrastructure for the community, including providing the opportunity for more housing, something Queenstown sorely needs. “Being able to make a positive contribution to the community is a great source of motivation for the Beaver Contractors’ team. Everyone has a purpose, and a mojo for their work.” Beaver Contractors regularly lends its gear, its team, and its expertise on a pro bono basis to the Whakatipu Reforestation Trust, and this year has delivered gravel for an access track to a major reforestation project at Slope Hill Reserve, where 22,000 native trees were planted and described as a huge ecological coup for the Whakatipu Basin.
