They ring us if they have a problem and we fix it for them. “We have a lot of expensive machinery and equipment, but it’s of little value if you don’t have the right people operating that machinery, and the right people managing and supervising the work for your client.” Linton Contracting’s roots stem back to 1981 when it was founded by Geoff Linton as Earthmovers Cromwell to undertake general earthworks and associated projects in the local area. Rebranding as Geoff Linton Contracting a few years later, the company became heavily involved in the ground preparation for vineyards in the Cromwell Basin, before migrating to Southland in the 90s, and rebranding again as Linton Contracting in 2003. Located in Winton, Linton Contracting is now owned and operated by Peter and his business partner Russell Bradley, supported by a loyal team. “We operate throughout Southland as well as Otago,” says Peter. “We do a lot of a specialist and major infrastructure projects for tier one contractors like Fulton Hogan, Downer, and Hawkins, including major greenfield roading projects like the 2.7-kilometre Edendale bypass. We also work for construction companies like Calder Stewart and ABL, but our clients are a very broad mix that includes private clients and councils. “If it involves shifting earth, and horizontal construction, that is what we do – whether it is putting in a sump at the end of someone’s driveway to drain water, or doing major earthworks for a multi-million-dollar infrastructure project, and everything in between, that is what we do. Right now, we are doing a project for ElectroNet Services at the Kaiwera Downs Windfarm, building the access tracks and construction pads for the pylons.” Past projects have included a large number of flood bank protection upgrades, including the Wyndham Flood Bank Protection upgrade, and the Gore Flood Bank. The company was also engaged to do all site works for the new Mataura Valley Milk dairy factory at McNab, near Gore, and is about to start the earthworks and civil works for Fonterra’s UHT development in Edendale – all up, a $150m project. “We also do residential subdivision work and did the Homestead Bay subdivision at Jack’s Point in Queenstown. Currently, we are doing a couple of small subdivisions for local builders, which all contributes to alleviating the housing shortage.” Peter acknowledges that with the change of government there was a period of uncertainty about a number of large infrastructure projects that impacted on work continuity, but says there are now positive indicators that the corner has been turned. “It has been a long winter, but we ensured we looked after our people so that when the work returned, which it is now, we had the people to do it. Our team includes skilled excavator operators and bulk unit drivers, right through to supervisory staff with diplomas in civil engineering. Two team members have been with the company for 20 years, about four for 10 years and the rest would average three years. Our success as a business is all about the people, but by that I really mean all the people including our team, our clients and our suppliers. Most importantly, we stand by our work; if the customer isn’t happy, we’re not happy.” Proudly working together to build a strong future for Southland.
