T T Russell Fredric “We work very effectively with large companies and their standards are very high, but ours are also.” Setting a high bar has paved the way to a successful business model for Christchurch-based JCL Asphalt. Owned by James Craw, JCL Asphalt is celebrating 20 years in business, having been a modest start-up in September 2004 with James as its sole owner. “Over the first year we built up to a small team of six staff; that’s effectively enough to have an asphalting crew, and we were mainly just a group of mates,” James says . “I’ve always strived to have exceptional quality. I learned asphalting at Fulton Hogan so I was in a really good crew there for five years and got taught very well, and I carried that on and grew our name and our brand on our quality.” The company offers a comprehensive range of services that includes asphalt road surfacing, chip sealing, construction, repairs, car-park surfacing, footpaths, residential driveways and tennis courts. It expanded into Cromwell seven years ago to provide a service base for Central Otago. Today, JCL Asphalt employs around 45 permanent staff and operates an impressive fleet of machinery that includes three Vögele road pavers of various widths and some impressive truck rigs. Laying asphalt correctly and quickly is a critical part of the process to ensuring a long-lasting quality result and a smooth ride, James says. “We do a lot of good planning around that quality and delivery space. We raised that bar years ago and we’ve held it.” Quality also means keeping JCL Asphalt’s fleet in top condition, both mechanically and visually, which is important to the business’ branding, with this uncompromising ethos even extending to the look and quality of the personal protection equipment (PPE) provided to staff. During the past 20 years, JCL Asphalt has paved significant areas of roads, private driveways, commercial premises, civic amenity areas and residential projects. Notably, a 17,000sqm private motor-racing track built at Mt Lyford for a long-term client resulted in a Canterbury Civil Contractors of New Zealand award in 2020. Industry onlookers took note. “It was pretty high level [in the precision of the paving] and that was interesting because that led us into doing some motorway work in Christchurch on the Southern Motorway to support a tier-one contractor, who said, “If you can do a racetrack like that, you can pave along the motorway,” and that’s led on to more work as well,” says James. “We work very effectively with large companies and their standards are very high, but ours are also. They can rely on us to turn up; they know that our systems and processes are right up there with theirs.” JCL Asphalt is often the key support partner to tier-one contractors. “That’s been our model for a long time and it works well. That’s why we have a high standard with our PPE and our fleet and robust systems; there’s no question around if we are the right company to do the job.” • Truck Hire • Truck Sales • Equipment Rental Proudly supporting JCLAsphalt quotes@cvh.co.nz 0800 284 4473 HIRE IT.
