| 83 ProColour Painting T T Rosa Watson Bright and bold scoops Gold award The spectacular winning renovation project on a Nelson home included 22 different interior paint colours. “We strive to produce the best quality, and that’s what drives us to enter the awards and enter these jobs.” CONTRACTING A spectacular renovation project on a Nelson home that included 22 different interior paint colours has picked up Gold at the Master Painters NZ Awards of Excellence. The winning project, completed by ProColour Painting, was carried out as part of a renovation on a home in the city. ProColour Painting owner Steve McKenzie says the client asked for bright and bold colours to use in the house. “Colours that were inspired by the client’s travels around the world and the artwork she had on the walls.” There were bright yellows, oranges and turquoise, he says. Some colours took more work than others, with some needing five coats. Yellows and blues are particularly challenging, Steve says. In the end, it all came together well and was perfectly matched with the furniture and carpet. “Once the artwork and furniture were in the house, it looked amazing.” The job was a “once in a life time opportunity” for the team, Steve says. “There are not many opportunities to paint with so many colours in one project. It’s pretty awesome for the team and we were very excited we’d won a category award.” The company has entered the awards each year since 2019. They already have a project lined up to enter in this year’s awards, Steve says – a rejuvenated cedar weatherboard home. “We are completely stripping (the boards). We’ve taken all the old stain off and taken it back to its natural product.” It was painted with a natural wood oil to showcase the natural grain and colours and took four team members 300 hours to complete. ProColour Painting is a member of Master Painters NZ and is the one of only four Dulux accredited painters in the region. The company is also a member of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce. All staff members are qualified painters, and are experienced in a range of services. Along with the new builds and renovations, the company also carries out wallpapering, aluminium window spraying, driveway painting, roof painting and Gib stopping. They can also retexture concrete driveways with a spray-on acrylic textured coating. “It’s a range of everything really. We just try to have a point of difference,” Steve says. “We have a range of specialist products – aluminium painting, driveway painting. Then we also do garage floor coatings.” The team can carry out eight jobs at a time, travelling the region as far as Kaiteriteri. Over the years there had been huge innovation within the industry, with new products coming on the market, Steve says. “With aluminium window spraying you can re-colour the entire outside of a house, including both the cladding and aluminium windows.” Wallpaper feature walls are a trend at the moment, along with painting external brick cladding. Steve started the company in 2016 having been in the painting game for five years prior. Starting out on his own, he has built the company up to now employing eight staff. An apprentice made the top four of last year’s Master Painter Apprentice of the Year. The company sets high standards for its team, Steve says. “We strive to produce the best quality, and that’s what drives us to enter the awards and enter these jobs.
