A professional member of ADNZ since 2007 and a licensed building practitioner, Julie-Ann specialises in bespoke residential designs, from new builds to transformative renovations. Her work includes accessible designs, such as a bathroom for a multi-generational home, which was a finalist in the 2024 TIDA NZ Bathroom Awards. The design features a mosaic-tiled, walk-in shower for assisted living, complete with a curved wall and seamlessly integrated, concealed grab rails that blend harmoniously with the overall aesthetic. “The best part of renovations is helping clients see the hidden potential in their homes,” says Julie-Ann. Another of her notable projects is the aircraft hangar house in Alexandra, a unique blend of functional aircraft hangar and highspec residential home. Set against the backdrop of Central Otago’s breathtaking mountain views, the design incorporates thermally broken windows, high-performance insulation, and a north-facing veranda to maximise seasonal sunlight. A versatile second bedroom can function as an office or media room, featuring concealed furniture for adaptability. The middle courtyard also boasts an extractable louvered roof, enabling year-round usability. Another significant project is the Mill Creek Crematorium, designed for Campbell & Sons Funeral Services. Situated on the Taieri Plains, this building strikes a balance between industrial functionality and sensitivity. Prioritising privacy and tranquillity, it features a soundproof Farewell Lounge, designed for intimate gatherings, and is enhanced by David Trubridge’s sculptural lighting and peaceful garden views. Julie-Ann’s contributions to the industry extend beyond her design practice. She is currently leading an archival project for Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ), aiming to consolidate the organisation’s nearly 60-year history. In preparation for ADNZ’s 60th anniversary in 2026, Julie-Ann and her team of volunteers are working to document the organisation’s history and the contributions of its members, ensuring that vital information is preserved for future generations. “We’re processing the data so it can be recorded in one place before it’s lost to history,” she explains. “The goal is to provide a cohesive picture of our members’ contributions, which can be used in publications and presentations for the 60th celebration.” Julie-Ann’s dedication to mentorship is also evident in her role as a founding committee member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Dunedin chapter. She mentors young women entering governance roles, inspiring the next generation of leaders in architecture. “It’s inspiring to see more women thriving in architecture,” she says. “This year’s ADNZ awards were a great example, with several impressive woman designers taking home top honours. With more than 50% of architecture students now women, the future is bright, and I’m excited to help shape that future.” design arc Ltd continues to redefine architectural design across Dunedin and beyond, with a commitment to innovation, mentorship, and shaping the future of the architectural industry. <"6' ,22,2* 6&+,8(&896( īĭĬ īljĴ ljĴīİ "6&+,8(&896(Ƈ'(7,*2Ł"6&ĺ&3ĺ2@ <<<ĺ'(7,*2Ł"6&ĺ&3ĺ2@ '(7,*2 "6& ,1,8(' )36 6("8,;( (7,*2 3098,327 BLUEPRINT BUILDERS LTD Trevor Spence 027 228 7870 | PO Box 5201, Dunedin blueprintbulders@xtra.co.nz RENOVATIONS | BATHROOMS | KITCHENS | DECKS Proudly Supporting Design Arc REFINED TIMBER SURFACES FORTE.CO.NZ
