A new-home build at Lake Hood won the Commended Award for a New Home over 300sqm. Designed by Garry Mayne and built by the local Ryan Proffitt Construction, the inspiration for this large lake-front family home was taken from an existing home on the same street. “Our clients wanted to put their own spin on that concept,” Garry says. “Due to prevailing winds, we’ve carried through the same H shape to this project. The easterly wind is the morning wind and it’s not something you want to be in. We’ve put outdoor entertaining areas on the northern and western sides.” These clients love to entertain, and their new home is expertly equipped with fantastic indoor-outdoor flow leading to terracing down to the lake front. All the key rooms, the master bedroom and the living and dining all have an aspect to the water. This was the second new build undertaken by these clients, so they were familiar with the process, kept calm and carried on. “They wanted to get the running costs of the house down, so we’ve got some pretty high-quality insulation in the batts, and also in the window and door joinery, and an insulated floor slab. “They’ve got solar on the roof and they’re starting to see the benefits of that in the summer months. It’s quite an efficient house to run.” Garry says he saw this project as an awards contender. “It is well proportioned and well finished, and sits beautifully amongst lush landscaping on its lake setting. “It is nice to be recognised at the ADNZ Awards. The competition is getting harder and harder every year with the level of homes Kiwi designers are now producing. It’s great to be recognised amongst them.” Chilton + Mayne Architecture takes pride in creating long-lasting spaces for clients and the public to enjoy. David Chilton and Garry formed Chilton + Mayne Architecture in 2010 after long careers in the industry. Combining their skills and knowledge, and sharing their values and commitment, David and Garry provide collaborative and tailored architectural solutions. This project was a collaboration with Ryan Proffitt Construction, with whom Chilton + Mayne Architecture enjoys a long-standing relationship. “On a project like this, there is coordination between us and the builders on site. Ryan is very easy to work with, and he came in to advise on the constructability of our design,” says Garry. “We want all of our projects to benefit from a collaborative approach, and this way we believe we give our clients the best outcome for their projects.” Chilton + Mayne Architecture prides itself on its documentation, and builders like to build from the practice’s drawings.
