JosephDavid Architecture and Seres Construction ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Nestled on an elevated section within the Redmond Spur subdivision on Christchurch’s Port Hills, a standout residence is taking shape, one that integrates feng shui principles in its design from JosephDavid Architecture. Built in collaboration with Seres Construction, the house, which is located on Kitcheners Knoll Road, reflects the almost 20 years’ experience of accomplished local architectural designer, Joseph Perkinson. Specialising in designing smart new residential and commercial architecture, thoughtfully and sustainably, Joe has created a sanctuary, carefully tailored to the lifestyle of his clients, who are currently based in Hong Kong. Spanning 326sqm on an 826sqm section, the two-storey, four-bedroom, three-anda-half-bathroom home integrates feng shui principles and sustainability with an aesthetically pleasing design. The clients wanted to craft a home overlooking the city that feels calm, connected to its surroundings, and utterly functional for a growing family. “It had to work in different ways for them. They don’t want to build something so bespoke that it would be difficult to sell in future,” says Joe. “But they do have a specific way that they like to live in the space, and there were feng shui principles they wanted to bring into the home as well, so it could be lovely and calming to be there.” Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a double-height space that floods the central area with natural light from the north-facing windows. The main level features an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area with a media room and a hidden “working kitchen” designed to keep culinary activity, out of sight. The upper level contains the private spaces, including a spacious main suite with a walk-through dressing room and an ensuite. Additional bedrooms and a guest suite ensure comfort for friends and family. For the children, a dedicated play area adjoins a home office, offering convenience and versatility. The home’s exterior combines dark-stained vertical cedar with Rockcote Cerano plaster. The house is anticipated to be a 12-month build project. “Seres Construction delivers exceptional quality, and we’ve worked together on some great projects,” says Joe. A recent example of JosephDavid Architecture’s work in the commercial design realm includes the redevelopment of the former Hands Craft Store on Normans Road, now retail premises for M.M Linen. Others include commercial premises in Strowan, Addington and High Street, Christchurch. From stunning new standalone family homes to smart duplexes and townhouse developments, licensed design practitioner Joe has designed timeless, modern homes across West Melton, Harewood, Fendalton and Huntsbury. Working in his design studio on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Kilmore Street, Joe manages every aspect of his practice from client interaction to design execution on build projects nationwide. His central city location is also handy for Joe’s deep appreciation for art, which is evidenced by his role on the board of the Friends of the Christchurch Art Gallery. “Side note is we’re preparing for a great art auction coming up in May, so if you like art, keep an eye out for that.” “It had to work in different ways for them.
