T T Karen Phelps “This equipment allows for survey, intervention and subsea engineering tasks in even the most challenging ocean conditions.” Wellington-based Seaworks has expanded its fleet with the launch in early 2026 of the MV Southern Cross, a 44.5-metre monohull research and survey vessel designed to undertake deep water seabed surveys across the Pacific. Seaworks Chief Executive Officer Tim Brown says that the vessel will be fitted with a Kongsberg EM124 hull-mounted deep water multibeam system, allowing for detailed mapping and analysis of the ocean floor and initially it will support environmental and mineral seabed surveys. “We are a nimble operator and continually invest in the fleet and equipment that will best support our clients. We always position ourselves as best we can to respond to the market,” says Tim. Established in 1981 Seaworks has grown to become the largest and most respected brand in New Zealand’s marine services sector. It provides an extensive range of marine-specific services and vessels to clients both domestically and across the South Pacific. Over more than four decades, Seaworks has completed over 700 projects and installed more than 1,800 kilometres of submarine cable. Its expertise spans subsea surveys, ROV deployments, dive support, cable installation and maintenance as well as marine salvage and offshore project management. The company’s commitment to safety, quality and environmental performance is reflected in its triple-ISO certification. Tim says that Seaworks operates the largest and most capable fleet of specialist vessels available for charter in New Zealand. Its capabilities include ROV and dive support, survey operations, offshore construction, rig assistance, towage, patrol and expedition vessels. Among its fleet are the DP2 Seamaster, a dynamically positioned ROV, survey, and construction support vessel; the DP1 Seaworker, a versatile support vessel; the MV Seasurveyor catamaran; and coastal patrol and general-purpose offshore workboats. Tim says each vessel is purpose-built or adapted to meet specific project requirements. The company’s ROV division features the H800 observation-class ROV capable of 1,000-metre depths with high-resolution 4K videography, and the Quasar-6, New Zealand’s only permanent hydraulic work-class ROV. “This equipment allows for survey, intervention and subsea engineering tasks in even the most challenging ocean conditions. For subsea capabilities, the Quasar-6 is our best asset, permanently based in New Zealand and our main customer is Transpower. It is routinely used in Cook Strait,” says Tim. Collaboration is another cornerstone of Seaworks’ operations. The company is a partner and shareholder in several leading marine service providers including Western Work Boats, Discovery Marine, Marine Services NZ, Shadowland Expeditions and Australian-based Bhagwan Seaworks Marine. “These partnerships extend our capabilities and ensure clients receive integrated, high-quality marine solutions,” explains Tim. He says Seaworks has several submarine cable projects in the pipeline and remains a key player in that market.
