T T from page 34 LIFESTYLE The Hawthorndale Care Village While the community and local sponsor rallied strongly behind the project, he says the response from the wider business community and contractors who helped bring the facility to life was equally remarkable, with an overwhelming level of generosity, support and practical assistance that exceeded expectations and demonstrated a shared commitment to its success. Hawthorndale Infection Prevention Control Nurse Advisor Jan McFadzien says it used to be very hard for residents to get outside at Calvary Hospital, but that’s no longer the case. There are no steps anywhere in the new village and it’s very easy for residents to walk or wheel themselves outside. “In our first staff wellness questionnaire, there were lots of positive comments about how they were really enjoying seeing the residents outside and walking over to the care centre,” says Jan. “They like the mix of houses and how the residents talk about being in a community.” One staff member had shared a fond memory of bundling up a resident in a wheelchair and getting her and her daughter over to her house as it started raining, with everyone laughing all the way. “That’s the point of this model: there’s nothing wrong with an elderly person being outside and getting rain on their face — that’s normal life,” observes Frank. Clinical Manager Louise Slocombe says a recent survey of family members was also very positive. “Families are overwhelmingly grateful and appreciative of the care, the staff and the overall environment at the village and are noting the welcoming and supportive atmosphere.” Residents enjoy home-cooked meals and can help with prep if they wish. With a silent bell system installed, they’re also sleeping better. As well, discreet use of technology ensures this is a safe and secure village.
