Established in 2024 by Dan and Kereana Butterfield, who both started Kiwi Skips eight years earlier, it’s run with exactly the same idea in mind: to make their customers’ experience as enjoyable as possible while solving their waste problem, whether it’s solid or liquid. Last year, Kiwi Enviro was joined by operations manager Sean Griffin, who came with seven years’ experience in the vacuum and liquid waste side of the industry, having previously worked in the transport industry. Between Kiwi Skips and Kiwi Enviro, the three run a 16-strong team and 15 trucks, including hydro excavation and vacuum trucks, as they handle the daily roster of waste jobs all over Southland. The team from Kiwi Enviro put their vacuum trucks to good use, emptying septic tanks and grease traps, managing effluent, unblocking drains and pipes, and doing whatever the job is at hand before taking the contents away for environmentally friendly disposal. If your toilet isn’t flushing too well, it could mean your septic tank is full, and Kiwi Enviro can send a truck the same day, and in some cases straight away. The same applies for commercial premises with a blocked drain. “We know time is money, so we answer the phone 24/7, and it’s always either Sean or me on the other end,” explains Dan. “We do what it takes when people are in need.” The non-destructive digging side of Kiwi Enviro is where the hydro-excavation trucks come into play, safely digging around services such as power, fibre, or water. Hydro-excavation uses high-pressure water, and an even stronger vacuum to take the debris away through a six-inch hose that can be introduced into surprisingly small spaces. “We turn the existing soil or debris into a slurry, which the vacuum excavation system simultaneously vacuums away, eliminating the need for heavy machinery and double- handling the product, and of course there’s no risk of damaging underground infrastructure, no risk of injury or death. Hydro Excavation is the future of digging,” says Dan. Typical jobs include locating existing services, such as the sewer, power and water, when subdividing a section with an older house on it, but it’s also a system that can save a lot of work in tight places, explains Sean. “Today, we were hydro-ing a pole inside a shed where the builders cut out a small section of concrete and we were able to remove the earth around it so they could pull the pole out to replace it without having to dig up all the concrete floor. “We’ve done the same thing inside a two-storey home, where the builders needed to re-pile and add earthquake strengthening.” It’s an ingenious system allowing on-site internal access to places where you can’t take a digger, such as inside a shed or a house, allowing underfloor repairs to be done without destroying the whole floor.
