| 53 Onlandscapes CONTRACTING Complex project scoops two industry awards The winning project features extensive hard and soft landscaping, outdoor entertaining spaces, an artificial turf pitch-and-putt golf green, pergolas, an outdoor shower, and an outdoor kitchen and fire. Kelly Deeks Christchurch landscaping company Onlandscapes has firmly planted itself among the country’s top performers, earning a Gold Medal for Construction and the People’s Choice Award at the Registered Master Landscapers’ Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025. For founder and director Ollie Newman, the recognition reflects years of refining his craft, building a strong team culture, and championing high standards across the industry. The winning project, located on Watford Street in Strowan, was one of the most complex undertakings Onlandscapes has delivered. The clients wanted an “oasis, resort-style” outdoor environment completed in time for Christmas – leaving a tight construction window between late August and December. The design, created by Studio Botanics, arrived via an unexpected email inquiry, and Ollie instantly saw a great opportunity. With some subcontractors unavailable before Christmas, the team redesigned elements to keep the job moving, replacing planned stonework with blockwork finished by a plasterer. Existing structures added to the complexity, including an out-of-level pool, established trees, and narrow access ways. “The clients were some of the best we’ve ever had,” Ollie says. “There was clear communication, they paid on time, and we all had the same goal – to have it finished and looking perfect for Christmas.” The project features extensive hard and soft landscaping, outdoor entertaining spaces, an artificial turf pitch-and-putt golf green, pergolas, an outdoor shower, and an outdoor kitchen and fire. Client feedback praised the team’s attention to detail and professionalism. For Ollie, the awards also highlight the importance of choosing a Registered Master Landscaper. After serving six years on the national board – double the usual term – he recently stepped down to make way for new voices. He remains passionate about industry collaboration, professional standards, and encouraging young talent. “Being a Registered Master Landscaper gives clients real assurance, especially for large projects like this,” he says. “There are a lot of moving parts behind the scenes – time management, materials, subcontractors. You need someone with experience linking all those chains together.” Onlandscapes’ emphasis on communication has also extended to internal systems. Ollie says the team now uses group chat channels connecting designers, clients, and crew, ensuring everyone sees real-time updates and changes. “It helps prevent delays and keeps the project moving smoothly,” he says. The People’s Choice Award is particularly meaningful for Ollie and his team. “It’s voted for by the people we work for every day,” he says. “Knowing the local community values what we do – that’s huge for us.” Ollie hopes to stay involved with the Young Landscaper of the Year competition, which he sees as vital for attracting and developing the next generation. After 28 years in the industry, he still loves the work and wants young people to understand the opportunity in landscaping. Founded by Ollie and his wife Juliet in 2009, Onlandscapes has grown from a one-man operation into a highly regarded Christchurch team known for quality workmanship and strong referrals. More than 80% of their work comes from repeat clients or word of mouth, and Ollie says the business aims to stay boutique rather than expand. “We’re not trying to grow bigger. We just want to keep refining our recipe – improving communication, improving systems, and delivering the best possible results,” he says. Onlandscapes remains focused on what it does best: working hard, problem-solving creatively, and transforming outdoor spaces into places families can enjoy for years to come. “There are a lot of moving parts behind the scenes – time management, materials, subcontractors. You need someone with experience linking all those chains together.” CREATE YOUR DREAM BACKYARD 0508 4 DECKS | sales@onestopdeckshop.co.nz | onestopdeckshop.co.nz CHRISTCHURCH | WANAKA | AUCKLAND We are your outdoor timber, decking and landscaping experts with products and solutions for everything decking, under your deck, around your deck and above your deck. 021 289 5444 jmwelectrical.co.nz Proudly supporting Onlandscapes LOCAL.
