One Sixty One Architectural Studio ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN After just three years in business, Christchurch-based architectural design firm One Sixty One Architectural Studio is emerging as a key collaborator in the commercial design space. Led by Michael Drummond, who has more than 15 years of architectural design experience, the firm has quickly established itself as a trusted specialist, having completed projects across hospitality, education, fitness and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). While the firm is relatively young, its strategic approach to partnership and project management has distinguished it within a competitive industry. Michael believes the company’s strength lies in its ability to guide clients and consultant teams from concept through to construction, ensuring clarity, efficiency and high-quality outcomes. He says its key capability is working with other consultants, and overseeing and managing the design process to achieve what the client wants, taking the project from building consent through to construction. Central to the firm’s growing success is a leadership philosophy built on collaboration. “Often, I work with other architectural designers, some who specialise in interior design. I see my strength as working with a team of talented designers and consultants, while delivering the outcome the client wants, on time.” This approach has supported the firm’s steady expansion, with each year bringing an increased workload and more complex opportunities. Among its recent high-profile projects are two heritage-listed developments requiring expert navigation of regulatory requirements and preservation standards. Michael worked alongside architect Mijntje Lepoutre on the development of the OGB Restaurant in the historic Old Government Building. “She looked after the design and finishing, while I oversaw the building consent documentation, construction monitoring, CPU (Certificate for Public Use) etc.” Another project was assisting with elements of the fit-out at The Church Pub, completed in partnership with Gemma Attwood of Pluvio Design, and Mijntje. Both developments presented unique heritage challenges, showcasing the firm’s capability in specialist environments. “Both buildings are heritage listed, so not your typical commercial project.
