Below, Classic Motorcycle Mecca. “We also have a skills shortage and so it is important that we have a town that is very liveable that attracts people to live here.” When Bill Richardson passed away he left behind an extensive collection of private trucks that was his pride and joy, and stored in a 10,000sqm metre shed behind his house. “We had to work out what to do with the collection,” says Scott. “Southland really had no tourism industry and while we had some geographical features it wasn’t Queenstown. “We ended up doing quite a major extension to the shed to house a collection of very early Ford cars that we had purchased from another ex-Southland person. “It’s now a 15,000sqm display space with a large-scale restaurant, café, conference/event centre and was opened in 2015. “That formed the Bill Richardson Transport World which has become the pre-eminent tourist attraction for Invercargill.” From the running boards of a 1949 Ford 5-tonner to a collection of prized yesteryear trucks, Bill would be delighted his legacy lives on to be enjoyed by many and that the business dynasty he forged on the back of trucking continues to roll forward. Meanwhile, the O’Donnell family and Scott are also assisting with development of The Hawthorndale Care Village, which will be a new type of dementia facility that replicates everyday life in a suburban neighbourhood within a safe, secure setting. The design of the village, the philosophy and the way its residents are cared for is centred around evidence suggesting familiarity, comfort and stimulation has the greatest impact on overall health and well-being. “The Hawthorndale Care Village came about because my father died from dementia. We got him the best care that we could find but not the care he deserved. I wanted to fix that for other patients.” Proud to supply Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying services to HW RICHARDSON LTD 90 Liddel Street Invercargill Phone 0800 THE PLUMBER Email: admin@jacksonplumbing.co.nz P.O Box 5108 Waikiwi Invercargill 9843 Proud to be associated with HW Richardson Ltd PROUD TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH HW RICHARDSON LTD Industrial • Commercial • Residential “Quality Solutions delivered on Time” INVERCARGILL QUEENSTOWN DUNEDIN CHRISTCHURCH
