TLV: Market-leading expertise Bill Newton has been passionate about the business of steam for all his 38 years working in the industry, starting his career as an enthusiastic young boiler operator. When the opportunity arose to lead steam specialist TLV’s venture into New Zealand in 2020, Bill embraced the challenge, taking the role of New Zealand and NSW Regional Manager. Both the Australian and New Zealand o ices are Associate companies under the parent company in Japan (TLV International), which manufactures all the componentry. TLV is a leader in the ield of steam and condensate parts and systems. “Over the previous ive years there had been high demand from customers for a market-leading expert in the steam ield where they could source not only components but also advice and know-how around a wide range of systems and applications associated with steam and condensate,” says Bill. In the eighteen months that TLV New Zealand has been operating, the business has grown from 5% market share to about 15% and growing on a daily basis. “We’ve evolved from just providing sales of TLV parts to now encompassing design, project management, total steam solutions and applications. We undertake and overview the customer’s overall plant applications and processes to maximise the best outcome of their operating systems. We can assist with all aspects of the plant by providing products, services and solutions to holistically support our customers. We conduct steam trap testing, and plant audits, report on system conditions and make recommendations to improve plant operation and e iciencies to meet with current environmental conditions and customer demands.” TLV New Zealand’s core customer sectors are very diverse, and Bill says that wherever steam is used commercially he and his team are there to help. “There are very few industries that don’t use steam as a source of energy or heat. The most prominent industries include food and beverage, agriculture, clothing, dairy, paper corrugating, hospitals & healthcare and petrochemical. Established in Christchurch, TLV New Zealand maintains unlimited coverage throughout New Zealand, and Bill has taken on four experienced sta members to ensure customers receive the support and service they require, when they need it. “So that we can provide timely response and meet our customers on-site requirements, we currently have two sta based in Christchurch covering the South Island, one in Auckland and one in Hawke’s Bay. Currently I’m based in Hawke’s Bay as well, but cover all of New Zealand looking after the larger projects. We’re in a big ive-year energy saving project with Wattie’s at the moment. This is our irst year on that project so I need to be close at hand.” Bill and his team have also played a key role in making steam system improvements at Silver Fern Farms’ Pareora site, with a design proposal for a steam generated instantaneous hot water system currently underway at the Hokitika plant. “It’s very exciting to be leading this new venture in New Zealand. My team members are very passionate as well. It’s very hard to ind experienced people trained in steam energy now. One of my senior guys has about twenty ive years experience, others have ten to ifteen years experience.”
