Timaru-based company Brosnan Transport’s investment in its future and the needs of its customers has included the construction of 22,000 square metres of warehousing facilities in the past two years. In July 2019 the business moved from Meadows Road to a completely new purpose-built facility in Seadown Road, Washdyke. The new site boasted two 4000m2 sheds connected by a 3000m2 enclosed canopy, but soon needed further expansion. Managing director Greg Brosnan says the investment in the new site was precipitated by the need to consolidate Brosnan Transport’s existing facilities, some of which were leased, onto one site as well as seeing a gap in the region for food-grade storage facilities. “Since then, and we’ve only just shifted into it in late October this year, we’ve doubled the original size, we now have 22,000 square metres of undercover warehouse.” “Stage one was building on what were already developing, it was responding to what our customers were asking for and it was also something we looked at building ourselves. “We had warehousing that was part of our day-to-day business and we could see an opportunity and we secured some good contracts with some significant customers.” The second stage expansion was caused by an immediate response in the market to the first stage and was a case of “build it and they will come”, Greg says. A large portion of the company’s warehousing business is centred around unpacking imported sea freight containers which must be undertaken in a registered Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) site by accredited staff. “That’s a big part of what we do. It’s a very privileged role to be an accredited person and to be able to handle products coming from overseas because we are the first line of defence for the country and for the biosecurity system, so we take that really seriously.” The synergy of warehousing and logistics is an efficient, cost-effective option for many of Brosnan Transport’s customers. Those who import goods are increasingly wanting to scale back their own physical facilities and store goods at a third party site; this effectively becomes a remote warehouse with the ability to have products picked, packed and delivered quickly and efficiently by Brosnan Transport. Essential to this service is the real-time assessment and tracking of inventory using Consignly3P software which can be readily accessed by both Brosnan Transport and the customer. “It’s where we believe we have filled a void, there’s no one that really offers this in this area and it’s proved to be quite a success.” While the company has a strong regional focus, many customers using Brosnan’s warehousing and inventory service are North Island companies supplying Canterbury-based businesses. Brosnan Transport is supported by an innovative fleet comprising about 30 truck units, a mix of dynamic mix of side loaders, Hiab trucks, curtain siders, flat decks, truck and trailers, and b-trains. The company’s strong local focus is mutually beneficial to the community, Greg says. “The local people supporting us means we can support local people back and we’ve been pretty front and centre when it comes to sponsorship on different things. That support we’ve had from the community has been gratefully returned.” “We had warehousing that was part of our day-to-day business and we could see an opportunity and we secured some good contracts with some significant customers.” Brosnan Transport preferred fuel supplier.
