BUILDING Totalspan - North Canterbury Selected as Finalist in the 2021 Westpac Champion Business Awards provided Totalspan North Canterbury the perfect opportunity to celebrate its team for all their hard work during challenging times. The Westpac Champion Business Awards recognise excellence, innovation, and success of businesses and charities in the Canterbury region. Totalspan entered the Champion Producer/ Manufacturer – Small Enterprise category, making the top three out of 120 applications. While Covid-19 prevented the normal grand gala evening event and presentation of awards, Totalspan North Canterbury’s owners, Jamie and Ellen Petersen took the opportunity to take their office staff and contracting crews to Rangiora’s top restaurant, the Ivory Bar, to celebrate the achievement. Ellen says apart from the prestige of being selected Finalist, the entry process provided real benefit. “To enter the awards you have to complete an application responding to questions covering things like business strategy, business culture and staff, community involvement, the systems you have in place, how you have been impacted by Covid-19 and how you adapted to it. Responding to those questions is a great opportunity to dig deep into your business and opens opportunities for improvement, and what you want to plan for over the next twelve months.” No strangers to competition success, four years after Jamie and Ellen took ownership of the business Totalspan North Canterbury entered and won the 2018 North Canterbury business awards. Based in Main North Road, Woodend, the business operates throughout the North Canterbury region from the Waimakariri Bridge right up to Kaikoura and includes the Hanmer Springs area. Totalspan’s extensive range of steel buildings embraces everything from lifestyle and residential to rural and commercial requirements including sheds, garages, farm buildings, purpose built structures and carports. With an extensive series of designs and sizes Totalspan offers limitless options. The unique design and structure of the Totalspan clear-span frame provides maximum space and total flexibility. “We provide a complete design and build option, using our regular team of North Canterbury builders,” says Ellen. “ Erecting a steel framed shed is quite specialised and we have a very skilled team of contractors who can make the task look very easy. If they prefer, customer can opt to purchase a kitset and use their own builders to erect the shed. Unless the shed is exempt from consents, our quotes all include council documentation.” Ellen recommends a site visit from their team, so that the shed can be customised to take into account wind zones, soil, the lay of the land and neighbours, and enabling us to provide an accurate fixed price quote with no hidden costs. “We get a much better gauge if we get out there and make recommendations based on what the client is looking for. If a visit is not an option then the client can come into the office and meet with a sales consultant. At any stage we can come out to site.” Totalspan North Canterbury has a range of sheds on display at its Woodend base, enabling customers to view the sheds’ interiors and appreciate the space provided using the clear-span steel framing, without centre poles. “If a customer wanted to build a set of storage sheds but there was nothing specific to what the customer wanted in our display yard, we have a number of local customers with sheds that we can take people to so they can see the options.” A long list of loyal and repeat customers is testament to the business’s success, which Ellen says reflects the product, the great team working for the business and complementary skillsets. “Prior to buying the North Canterbury franchise a few years ago, Jamie had a lot of experience building Totalspan sheds. On my side, I did a Masters in Business and I have a teaching degree — so we are a good team.” Dayne McKnight 027 432 5738 Paul Jackson 027 606 1065 dayne@mcknightplumbing.co.nz 03 377 3603 Derek Scott 0274 323 646 James Anderson 0274 348 189 C o n n e c t i o n s Proud to be involved with Totalspan North Canterbury MASTER ELECTRICIANS 2301799 P.O.
