BUILDING Fraemohs Homes T T to page 104 Quality over quantity for award-winning apprentice T T Richard Loader A month before completing his building apprenticeship with multi-award-winning Christchurch company Jim the Builder, George Wallis’ skills, drive and passion for his craft was rewarded with second place at the2023 Master Builders Central South Island Apprentice of the Year competition. “In the past we’ve nominated a few of our apprentices who have stood out and George just had those core qualities,” says Jim Sternberg, Jim the Builder’s founder. “I knew he would do well in the competition but it was also a good opportunity for him to benchmark himself. We’re all very proud of him and his achievements. He put himself out there, challenged himself and stood up very well.” George joined the Jim the Builder team as an adult apprentice in 2022, with a year to go in his apprenticeship, having previously worked for another builder. “I had got to know George through my son. I recognised his talent and passion for building but felt he wasn’t achieving his full potential, and spent a couple of years quietly encouraging him to join our team. “He has an eye for detail, and a passion for how he finishes things. He wasn’t afraid to ask questions, but was also at a stage in his apprenticeship where he had the ability to do things. It was just a matter of refining those skills.” George says he has always loved making things and using his hands. “My motivation comes from being able to create things that leave a lasting impact on the user, physically and emotionally. I believe in quality over quantity, constructing buildings that will last. “With the skillset we learn throughout our time as an apprentice we gain the ability to “Our timber products outperformed any other buildings in the Christchurch or Kaikoura earthquakes, and we sell a lot of timber products into the Wellington and Nelson region for that reason.” Fraemohs features in them including timber feature walls, and some timber on the outside. “We’ve sold Fraemohs’ homes throughout the country, generally as kitsets, but not everyone wants a kitset, and many people want a full build solution. So, we have a growing number of franchises in both North and South Islands and looking to add more. The Fraemohs interlocking timber system features in all its solid timber homes ensuring it is also earthquake proof. “Our timber products outperformed any other buildings in the Christchurch or Kaikoura earthquakes, and we sell a lot of timber products into the Wellington and Nelson region for that reason.” As well as residential projects Fraemohs Homes also undertakes commercial projects and is providing a kitset for the Chatham Islands extension of its airport terminal. “My motivation comes from being able to create things that leave a lasting impact on the user, physically and emotionally.” manipulate the world around us, for better or worse. We create spaces and buildings that influence how people interact with them, and we have the power to create a building that works harmoniously with the user and the environment.” Stand-out apprentice George Wallis.
