104 | Running a project a challenge Most of JTB’S work is residential, from high-end architectural homes right through to entry level homes. T T from page 103 Jim the Builder BUILDING At the last stage of an apprenticeship Jim challenges his apprentices to run a project including managing the day-to-day process with sub-contractors and suppliers. George’s project was a two storey, four-bedroom highend home in Sumner. “He made a fantastic job of what he did. He made a couple of mistakes which is normal but he was well and truly on top of his game and he used the project as the basis for the Young Apprentice of the Year competition. The judges met George on site, went through the project, discussed the various phases of the project and how he managed it.” Passionate about the apprenticeship programme and developing craftsmen, Jim sees it as a way that he can give back to the building industry. “There are a lot of young builders out there who have qualified through their apprenticeship but just don’t know how to build. “It’s quite scary. We’ve been building since 2005 and taking on a minimum of two apprentices a year over the last ten years. Over my time as Jim the Builder we are close to having put through maybe fifty apprentices, including during the earthquake times. We have eight apprentices on board currently, including older and younger apprentices. We’re constantly being asked by young people if we have a vacancy.” Andrew Clark joined Jim the Builder as a co-Director in 2010. Based in Christchurch, most projects are focused on the wider Christchurch region, with a few further afield. “Most of our projects are residential, from high-end architectural homes right through to entry level homes. The majority of our work at the moment would be renovation and extension work, as clients choose to improve what they already have rather than build a brand-new home. We have also done a lot of earthquake related work and are still heavily involved in that sector. We have a team of thirty, and are very lucky that our people have the same passion for the craft that Andrew and I have.” Category Winners NZ Master Painter of the Year Awards Proud to be working with Jim the Builder A PASSION FOR PAINTING www.chamlang.co.nz 03 389 9548 drains@gnbrewer.co.nz Proud to support Jim the Builder and their expert team. 0800 RED ELEC | info@redelectrical.co.nz | redelectrical.co.nz
