Archi Build BUILDING The high standard of craftsmanship Wanaka company Archi Build thrives on has attracted industry recognition through winning three 2023 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. The Wanaka house built by Archi Build was awarded Regional Gold, National Top 100 and the Regional Lifestyle Award for its stand-out kitchen. It is the first time the company, owned by husband and wife team Tom and Kelly Dupont, has entered the competition. The contemporary home was designed by Sebastiano Broadhead for a busy couple with two teenage children, with low maintenance and easy care a priority to allow the client and their family ample time for recreation and entertaining. “They gave their ideas to the architect to come up with their concept and also brought Tom in very early on to discuss the buildability of it, and to ensure it would not be outside of their budget,” Kelly says. The overall design is an ‘L’ shape which provides good shelter. The exterior is clad in vertical Adobo thermally treated timber and Kahu coloured steel which is an angular form of the traditional rounded corrugate profile. Its minimalistic street presence includes a discrete garage door seamlessly clad in Abodo to match the rest of the exterior on this understated elevation which completely belies the many surprises inside the front door. The 252 square three bedroom home features great spaces such as a media room and a sheltered timber deck with adjustable louvres over the area that flows from the main living area. Its beautifully curated interior makes great use of complementary materials with timber used throughout, including in the kitchen bench, shelving and cabinetry. A feature timber wall in the lounge provides warmth and ambience and offsets the black fireplace and wood storage which are two elements repeated on the deck. “The kitchen is a large space so that the family can be in there cooking or entertaining or hanging out; it’s very multi-purpose.” The main heating is underfloor and energy efficiency features include a Maxraft floor and thermally broken joinery with low emissivity glazing that increases the internal glass surface temperature and reduces the likelihood of condensation. Achieving the awards, especially as a first time entry, was “pretty incredible” while winning the kitchen award, with the “seriously stunning” design and fabrication undertaken by Melanie Craig Design, added further kudos to the result and all involved in the build. “We chose that home because lots of our own employees and subcontractors had commented how much they enjoyed building it and they just loved it. We got a lot of really good feedback.” Archi Build employs 20 builders. The company is committed to bringing new talent into the business and wider industry and employs three apprentices. “The apprentices that we are seeing come through have been really, really good.” “We make sure that we have always got apprentices coming through and for them to be getting experience on the various jobs that we have and seeing the different types of construction that we do.” Tom has been based in Wanaka since 2012 and developed the business based on his considerable experience in New Zealand and in London where he worked for five years.
