BUILDING Holiday home a winner This striking holiday home in Okains Bay won silver in the regional Master Builders House of the Year awards for first time entrants J&M Built. T T Richard Loader First time entrants in the Master Builders House of the Year awards, Christchurch architectural home builders J&M Built won Silver at the 2023 Canterbury regional awards with a striking holiday home built in Okains Bay. A reflection of the builder’s detailed craftsmanship and high-quality finish, the four-bedroom, 140sqm home makes clever use of recycled and repurposed materials as its contribution to sustainable building. Reclaimed timber from telephone poles and wharf beams were used in feature walls, cladding and decking while old light fittings, signs, and retro hanging scales were used throughout the house. In the fully tiled bathroom and main-bedroom ensuite, upcycled stainless-steel toilet pans have been installed, and old cabinets have been given a new lease on life as vanities with soft-close draws. A 2.7 metre stud throughout the house, is complemented with a cathedral ceiling in the lounge. Behind the kitchen a feature wall made from recycled telephone poles disguises 2.4 metre pivot doors clad in the same timber and lovingly made by the builders themselves. All window reveals use the same recycled timber, and hidden fixed, while 4-metre wide, 2.4-metre high bi-folds either side of the house open out to 120sqm of deck, providing a natural flow for outdoor living in a beautiful part of Banks Peninsula. J&M Built was established three years ago by Jamie Ellis and Matt Radburnd, with the goal of crafting high-end architectural homes for good clients wanting a good product produced. “Matt and I have both been in the industry for about fourteen years,” says Jamie. “We were extremely motivated and had the vision of running our own projects to produce a high-quality product for our own clients. We’re both people focused, and enjoy working with clients. We’ve only ever had happy clients and it’s pretty awesome being able to make someone’s dream become reality. “Having customers put their trust in you to build their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is pretty cool.” Through growing word-of-mouth referrals, home owners have formed the backbone of J&M Built’s client base but Jamie says a relationship has recently been established with a local architect who is now recommending them to his clients. “The architect has won many architectural awards and says a new project we’re building at Little River is his best piece of work yet. We focus on architectural residential projects — both new builds and renovation / extension work. We want to build high quality homes that will stand the test of time in the landscape. It’s very satisfying to stand back and see a really nice home that’s quite different and impressive and which we have produced. We now have four new builds underway.” J&M Built has grown to a team of six over the last three years, a mix of four tradesmen and two apprentices. “Getting Silver is a good starting point, but obviously we’re striving for Gold. Matt and I both know we’re good builders and we have a bloody good team behind us with a wealth of knowledge. We look after our team and they look after us.” SHAMROCK PAINTING Painting & Decorating Contractor 0274317847 CONTACT US Proudly Supporting J&M Built PROUD TO SUPPORT J&M BUILT For all your building supplies visit us at 550 Johns Road, Christchurch Phone: 0800 191 674 Email: info@mcvicaritm.co.nz McVICAR
