The awards acknowledge the challenges involved in completing high-impact projects within tight time frames, the scale and complexity of projects, the high standard of workmanship, and also recognise the achievements two of their talented young staff. First cab off the rank was the 2023 CCNZ Otago Awards, held in March, where Isaac Construction took home the Category C Award – Projects over $1million, as well as Supreme award, for the Malvern Street Sewer Replacement Project. The Leith River runs through the middle of Dunedin, with a sewer line running underneath. Isaac Construction was contracted to repair and strengthen the surrounding network with the challenge of the river flowing over top. “There were a lot of environmental controls involved in the project in the event of the river flooding, so we had to ensure it was being diverted in a way that could handle stormwater flow,” says Isaac Group’s Marketing Manager Jade Houghton “ We also needed to maintain fish passage, and ensure that nothing we did spilled into the waterway. The complexity of the project contributed to our success at the Awards.” In August, Simcox Construction was awarded the Category 4: Projects over $2m Award, along with the Supreme Award at the Nelson Marlborough CCNZ awards, for its work on the Birch Hill Vineyard and Dam development project. “Simcox Construction was engaged to assist their client with due diligence before the land was bought for a vineyard to ensure a dam could be built on the land,” says Jade. “That was a good example of early contractor engagement, and working with the client to help them realise their dreams, right through to the design and build of the dam. There were a lot of complexities that had to be overcome including a very steep site with a lot of health and safety considerations. Work on services under SH63 was also required, adding to the complexity.” The dam sits on 12.7 hectares of land, and the walls of the dam are 13 metres high. At the time the dam was completed it was the largest fully lined dam in the Nelson/Marlborough region. “It was a massive project, but that’s Simcox Construction’s niche — they had a very competent team of up to thirty people a day on site.” The Nelson Marlborough awards also recognised two of Simcox Construction’s young team members. Ollie Borlase won the Humes Women in Civil Award, while Leigh Gilmore won the Terra Cat Young Achiever Award.
