At the front of that success, it is the people who make the difference, says AWF’s General Manager Fleur Board. “We are now part of the NZX listed Accordant Group which covers the full range of industry and professional recruitment agencies operating in New Zealand. AWF is very much about doing the right thing by New Zealand and by New Zealanders, because we are New Zealand owned. We are of the view that if we do the right thing by the client, and the right thing by our candidates success will come. The people in our branches who are interacting with our clients and candidates every day get their satisfaction and enjoyment by effecting really good matches, and contributing to their client businesses, as well as the prosperity and futures of the candidates —whether those candidates just want a week’s work while backpacking, or people looking for long term career development, training and security.” AWF provides employers with temporary staff — short, medium and long term for project work, seasonal requirements, or to cover a variety of other needs including covering leave. It also provides some permanent recruitment services. “We have relationships with our clients at a local, regional and national level and take into account the fit between the candidate and the organisation from a values perspective, and what they are each looking for from a relationship perspective —whether that is long, mid or short term. Increasingly we find what we term‘temp-to-perm’ is a very attractive option for our clients and candidates alike. They may take someone on in the first instance as a temporary employee and over time justification for that role becoming permanent may be made. So our people transition from temporary to permanent. That means our employees get the opportunity to understand the company that they are working for, acquire skills along the way, and make informed decisions about where they see their futures.” AWF also offers customised offerings for some industry sectors including the broad category of civil and infrastructure which account for about 40% of AWF’s opportunities. “To support that large sector, we have our own dedicated in-house trainer who delivers Temporary Traffic Management, Traffic Management Operative and Site Traffic Management Specialist training. We can also assist candidates obtaining their WTR licence endorsements to get them working on the big machines.” Fleur acknowledges that the chronic labour shortage has loosened considerably since the days of Covid when across AWF’s network 1500 job applications were being received each month. “Now we’re receiving some ten thousand applications a month, quite a few from offshore and not eligible to work in New Zealand, but we still have to work through them.We get applications online, people walking in off the street because we are quite well known, or people referred or recommended to us, and work through the process of seeing if we can on-board them. The on boarding process is pretty rigorous, particularly around mandatory pre-employment drug screening, and we conduct various assessments and reference checks.”
