In addition to winning the Workplace Wellbeing and Large Business categories, Hilton Haulage also took home the competition’s highly coveted Supreme Award. Scott says getting into the transport industry is relatively easy, with few barriers to entry, but for Hilton Haulage the point of difference is its people. “Our business is all about our people and we are incredibly blessed with the team we have. They are an intrinsic part of Hilton Haulage, delivering for our community and customers every day. “People and their wellbeing are an area that we hope we are very strong on and certainly one that we want to make sure we deliver on. “The competition provided an opportunity to challenge ourselves to see if we are doing the best we can by our team and our community; is what we are doing relevant? Does it make a difference? Are we having an impact? The best way to test that is to enter a category like Workplace Wellbeing, and see if we are delivering equal or better initiatives to support their wellbeing.” Providing pastoral care such as Vitae wellbeing services around budgeting advice, counselling, and legal advice on a discreet basis and enabling staff to get help if they want it is just one of the ways Hilton Haulage demonstrates care to its most important asset – its people. “We are also incredibly passionate about our community and support local initiatives through sponsorship, recently donating $50,000 to the Cplay playground in Caroline Bay, which is an interactive community playground that will open in December. So, it’s trying to find every opportunity we can to support the wider community in which our team and families live in. “It is also finding every opportunity to provide not only financial benefits but holistic pastoral benefits back to team members including medical insurance, counselling, learning and development.” Scott says a very large proportion of the Hilton Haulage team have completed five to ten years’ service with the company, with many twenty-year veterans and a few thirty-year veterans. “Having those people who provide continuity of culture is really important to us. We like to think the reason they have stuck around so long is that it’s not too bad a place to work. “We are really fortunate to have them in the team. Where we can we always try to promote from within. Most staff who are now in management roles all started on the front line, be that driving forklifts, trucks, or a broom. “At its roots, Hilton Haulage is a family business. With our senior veterans retiring, we enjoy seeing their families come through. It is a real mark of success when you have the next generation following their family into the business and we have grandparents, parents, daughters, sons, cousins and uncles and aunties working in the team. “We do formal succession planning every quarter where we identify talent throughout the business and put the framework in place to develop that talent.” Given Hilton Haulage’s size and scale along with its 500 staff spread across New Zealand, the company is well and truly qualified for entry into the Awards’ Large Business category, which measures business performance across a wide range of metrics.
