60 | Taylored Spaces Alteration adds wow factor Taylored Spaces was awarded a commendation at the ADNZ Awards for design work on the alteration and addition to this Claremont St House in Māori Hill, Dunedin. T T Kelly Deeks ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Early success in the ADNZ Design Awards for Taylored Spaces provided opportunities for more projects, including this year’s alteration and addition on Claremont Street, Māori Hill. Taylored Spaces principal Nathan Taylor has more than 30 years’ experience in the construction industry and set up his design office in Dunedin in 2012. Taylored Spaces undertakes a broad spectrum of work including residential alterations and new builds, medium density apartment developments, and projects for the education sector. “I consider the scale of any design particularly important,” Nathan says. “A well thought out space can produce a fantastic result within a reduced footprint. I aim to shift a client’s focus away from floor area towards quality construction, positioning for maximum solar gain and supplementing this with an efficient thermal envelope. I am also particularly focused on advising my clients on where they should direct their expenditure in terms of achieving a warm and comfortable home.” Taylored Spaces brought home its first regional ADNZ Award in 2014, with two more projects highly commended that year. In 2020, Taylored Spaces won the national award for Residential New Home up to 150m2 for the Jason Street Glass House, which also won the regional Colour in Design Award. This year, Taylored Spaces was again celebrated at the ADNZ Awards with its Claremont Street alteration and addition awarded a commendation. Before Nathan got his hands on it, this was a dated 1980s home. It was purchased as it had potential with an elevated northerly aspect, and the opportunity to park four cars in a large but somewhat impractical internal garage. The client’s brief was to create a thermally efficient, contemporary dwelling with generous entertaining spaces, all in a masculine aesthetic. The split-level home now enjoys an enlarged kitchen with wine display opening to a dining and living space on the main level. Updated planning provides additional north facing glazing which takes advantage of the views over the surrounding neighborhood and provides new connections to an expanded outdoor area. Fins and hoods to the glazed areas shade the sun and screen the neighbours. One less bedroom on the main level allowed for a generous ensuite to the master bedroom with direct outdoor access, and an oversized guest bedroom also has its own bathroom. The basement level includes a bedroom, media room and bar area along with a connected bathroom, and the garage was reconfigured to remove the mid span posts and beams. Internal linings include local schist and dark cedar boarding, and both are offset by the warmth of the birch ply ceilings. Taylored Spaces designed all the joinery fittings to ensure a cohesiveness throughout the house. Externally, cladding is a mix of plaster, western red cedar, and schist, and LED strip lighting has been used internally and externally.
