64 | Rising to the challenge The striking Christchurch home, complete with pool, was built on a narrow, 7.5 metre wide section. ADQ Architecture ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN T T Rosa Watson Designing a home for a 7.5m-wide section was a challenging task for Christchurch-based ADQ Architecture, but the resulting build is a striking home complete with pool and outdoor area. Inspired by early Warren and Mahoney Architecture, the design for a Derby Street home in St Albans, Christchurch features a love of authentic materials and was dictated by the narrow inner city site. Built by Blue Summit Construction, it won gold at the Canterbury region Master Builder’s House of the Year Awards in 2021, and took out the Regional Lifestyle Award. ADQ head designer, Kent Roper, said Derby street was a highly successful project because of the shared vision of the designer and client, “as well as having a building contractor that understood the vision and also was very thoughtful about how to go about the build on such a tight site”. “The brief offered by the client particularly resonated with my personal aesthetic preferences of expressed structure and materiality.” He said the small site was a challenge, but this was met with a highly efficient and functional design. “Which is also something that I delight in achieving (and) readily matched my skill set. “The project was a very appropriate response to the urban vernacular and meeting the desires of the client and we achieved what I felt was the best architectural outcome.” ADQ specialises in lifestyle buildings, homes and retreats, architectural hill builds drawn from its Queenstown experience, and efficient and affordable designs and sympathetic alteration. Kent said Christchurch would continue toexpand, with satellite towns and subdivisions, and infill, as seen in the southwest and north of the city. “There will be further densification within the city, with more multi-unit and apartment developments, as well more minor and secondary units to established sites.” A lot of clients were continuing with alterations and extensions to existing homes, as this was often a cost-effective decision over shifting, he said. “Particularly when they enjoy their present location.” ADQ works across the board in the architectural landscape, from small alterations and extensions to large multi-developments and small commercial projects. “We tend to bespoke our service to our clients’ requirements, at times providing a ‘bare-bones’ documentation when a highly affordable option is required, as well as providing a full high-end architectural service where required. “Our clients needs and requirements are put first, and as a firm we have a strong ethos of producing sympathetic design to the urban and lifestyle environments. “This becomes particularly important when it comes to infill developments and alterations to existing homes.” ADQ was formed in Queenstown by Kurt Lehmann in the mid 1990s, originally named DGQ (Design Group Queenstown). In the mid-2000s, Kurt moved to Christchurch and Kent joined the practice in 2012, working beside Kurt in a barn on his lifestyle property in Little River. In 2017, ADQ moved to an inner-city office in Lichfield street, where it continued to build its Christchurch clientele. The 2020 pandemic saw ADQ shift into their own office building in Seaview Road, New Brighton. Kent said buildings consent application had become more onerous over the years, with more documentation required in order to fully show compliance. “As a firm we continue to evolve and adapt to deal with these continuing changes.” • www.adq.co.nz LOUVRETEC OPENING ROOFS / OUTDOOR ROOMS AVAILABLE RIGHT HERE IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD. www.louvretec.co.nz I I I I .l . .
