Peak Architecture ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN T T Kim Newth Christchurch-based Peak Architecture has a reputation for being approachable and pragmatic, making the design journey easy and enjoyable. Experienced in residential, commercial and industrial projects, the small professional practice has plenty on the books heading into 2024. “We have some pretty strong relationships with repeat clients,” observes Hamish Peter, who co-founded Peak Architecture with fellow director and architectural designer Simon Garth. “Whether it is a residential house or a commercial project, we like to work collaboratively with like-minded people, as a team, to bring projects to life. We’re very much relationship focussed.” Hamish and Simon, who are both LBP registered, first met as architectural design students some 18 years ago and then followed a similar career path that included travelling overseas and working in London on various projects. Through the years, they stayed in touch. “We both ended up in Christchurch after the earthquakes, working for different companies. We realised that we shared a similar outlook on where we wanted to head. We’re both South Islanders who like being based in Christchurch as it is a good central location. There has been plenty of development going on since the earthquakes. We saw an opportunity to form a business of our own here and to choose our own path.” Now well-established in the Christchurch market, Peak Architecture provides a full range of cost-effective design and technical documentation services. The team works closely with clients, developers, builders and other stakeholders from the initial brief to final project completion. As a technically focussed practice, Peak Architecture offers an immersive service, using the latest software to provide clients with a 3D walk through experience. The team aim to make the design process as smooth and efficient as possible. Peak Architecture has recently designed Whether it is a residential house or a commercial project, we like to work collaboratively with likeminded people, as a team, to bring projects to life.” some architectural homes in and around Christchurch. One is a three-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home in Westmorland that steps down a sloping hill site, with gorgeous views of the surrounding area. “We worked closely with the owner, who is a builder. He had some great ideas for the design, bringing in a touch of Japanese influence.” Another recent design project was a two-storey, four-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom, two living area executive-style family home, overlooking Moncks Bay. “It is an amazing site – a great spot for a stunning new family home.” Their preference is to be selective, with much of the focus in recent years on architectural homes, commercial projects and industrial development from warehouses to office spaces. “We’re doing a couple of commercial builds at Christchurch Airport at the moment.” Hamish says clients are generally becoming more aware of building code requirements and raising questions on features such as energy efficiency. In a recent Nelson project, their client expressed a desire to integrate passive design principles into their new home. This involved implementing a complete airtight envelope, installing a mechanical heat recovery system, substantially enhancing insulation, and creating an overall healthier and more thermally efficient living space. “Across most of our architectural projects, our clients are wanting to increase the specs around thermal performance, which is really good to see.” Heading into 2024, Peak Architecture is busy across a diverse range of projects in different areas, giving the team a solid and resilient foundation for the year ahead.
