| 73 Designing for the future in North Canterbury Sally has a strong focus on sustainability in construction, energy efficiency and designing for comfort and health. Sally Turnbull Architectural Design ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN North Canterbury offers wonderful opportunities for outdoor fun and relaxation, with Kaikōura and Hanmer Springs two of the region’s most popular holiday destinations. Increasingly, these towns are also seen as good places for retirement. As an experienced architectural designer working throughout the region, Sally Turnbull is conscious of how these two threads - holiday getaway and retirement living - require a thoughtful design response to ensure retirement dreams are future proofed. “A lot of people from the North Island are coming here wanting to build a holiday home that they can eventually retire to,” says Sally. “For these clients, I recommend adopting universal design principles. “That means making homes accessible, having level entry and tiled showers. If steps cannot be avoided, it’s about making space where a lift can go in. The goal is to create a design that will be versatile and adaptable.” With 30 years of architectural design experience in new homes, renovations, alterations and additions across North Canterbury and with many satisfied customers, Sally Turnbull Architectural Design is a well-established, trusted name in the local market. Sally has offices in Rangiora and Kaikōura and regularly travels to work on projects across the Waimakariri, Hurunui and Kaikōura districts. Among her recent projects is a low-maintenance, future-proofed alpine holiday home in Hanmer Springs, where the owners hope to eventually retire. “It is a prime example of future proofing design with not only stairs but also a Powerglide hydraulic lift to the upper level. While there are steps on one side, the other side has a gentle ramped path suitable for wheelchairs or other mobility aids. It has a tiled, level entry shower.” Sally’s strong focus on sustainability in construction, energy efficiency and designing for comfort and health are all evident in this gorgeous home where insulation is well above code and water harvesting has been included to reduce demand on the town supply. Stone cladding anchors the home to site T T Kim Newth and setting. The considered layout includes garaging, laundry, bathroom and service access areas on the lower floor. On the upper floor are bedrooms, bathrooms and open plan living to the north, flowing to private outdoor living areas. Two other recent holiday home projects in Hanmer Springs similarly showcase Sally’s flair for stunning aesthetics, easy care low-maintenance design, liveability and sustainability. ‘Eco on Oakview’ features in-slab heating powered by solar panels that deliver economical and effective heating that can even be managed remotely by the owners, with the aid of smart technology. ‘Bristol Street Bach’ is another high performer on insulation and passive solar gain features. Another exciting project for Sally this year involved designing her first Māori language early childhood centre at Hapuku School in Kaikōura, with the new centre due to open in December 2023. Her practice is also busy with residential home transformations. “With section prices having gone up a lot in places like Kaikōura, many people are looking at doing alterations, additions and renovations rather than building new.” Meanwhile, Sally enjoys an excellent working relationship with Dan McGuire and the team at Amuri Building Specialists that goes back decades in the local residential market. “The workmanship and attention to detail is fantastic.” Smart Alliances is the ideal choice for anyone looking to build a home in the Kaikoura region.
