In the heart of Nelson, a family-owned business has been quietly but steadily making significant contributions to the local construction scene. Donaldson Civil Ltd (DCL), founded in 1988, has evolved into a dynamic force in civil construction, boasting a team of dedicated specialists who take pride in their local roots. “We’re committed to staying at the forefront of technology to ensure we can deliver the best results for our clients,” says Luke Donaldson. “This commitment to innovation aligns with the company’s core values and sets us apart in a competitive construction industry.” Over the years the DCL ownership has expanded from Gary and Lynley Donaldson to include their children Luke and Kate. Ken Nell and Wayne Russ, both long-term employees, have also joined the business. The significance of being a local and family-owned business is not lost in the Donaldson Civil family and its business partners. “For staff, the family values are one of our business’s core values. They are part of the family and the soul of the business. Growing and developing staff and supporting them – both personally and professionally – is important. For clients this means they benefit from a highly skilled team and if there are any challenges on a job they can come to any one of the owners and speak to us direct. It’s a more personal approach.” Luke says there is a real focus on training and up skilling the company’s team of around 40 staff. “We have helped them achieve qualifications from excavator operators to civil diplomas in engineering and leadership training. Some staff members have dedicated over 30 years to the company, reflecting the sense of loyalty and camaraderie fostered within the DCL family.” DCL primarily operates in the Nelson and Tasman regions, contributing to the development of local infrastructure. Its focus on utilizing the latest technology and possessing specialist equipment, along with its highly skilled team, gives the company a competitive edge, enabling it to undertake a diverse range of projects. Notably, the company has expertise in trenchless technology, including horizontal directional drilling and pipe bursting equipment. Recent projects highlight DCL’s impact on the local landscape. One noteworthy project involved the use of trenchless technology to install a new sewer main in Wolfe Street and Montcalm Street in the tight confines of the Port Hills in Nelson. This project showcased the company’s ability to complete complex jobs while maintaining access for residents. A collaborative effort saw DCL working with two other local companies on the Rutherford Street upgrade saw 1.8m diameter stormwater pipes installed up to seven metres deep from Snows Hill to Examiner Street, with wastewater and water pipes renewed at the same time. One of the key challenges faced by the project was rerouting thousands of car journeys on one of Nelson’s busiest roads. The stormwater portion consisted of 185m of 1800mm diameter concrete pipe, plus some connections to manholes, sumps and laterals. A separate team completed watermain work on the upgrade at the same time with installation via open trenching however and directional drilling in the tight spots, where open trenching was not the best option. “This was a very successful project, and we are proud to be part of the collaborative team that delivered this project for Nelson City Council.” DCL’s portfolio also includes subdivision development work and directional drilling for various clients across the region. Currently DCL is involved in a project to install seven kilometres of new power cable on the northern outskirts of Nelson city through Atawhai for Network Tasman. This project, won in a competitive tender environment, also showcases the company’s capability in managing complex tasks involving both trenching and directional drilling, all while navigating heavy traffic. As a member of Civil Contractors New Zealand, DCL is deeply connected to the broader construction industry, ensuring that it stays informed about the latest developments and best practices. From its humble beginnings in 1988 to its current status as a prominent player in the South Island’s civil construction scene, Luke says that Donaldson Civil Ltd continues to embody its ‘fair’ core values – Family, Accountability, Integrity and being Realistic. As the company grows, it remains deeply rooted in the community, shaping the infrastructure that will define Nelson’s future.
