While Nick looks after the engineering side of the business, Cory heads the carpentry team. “That was our business plan right from the start,” says Nick. “It was out of the box thinking at the time, and you have to do that to be successful. You might do a new build that also has structural steel, balustrades or stainless steel benchtops and we can handle both the carpentry and steel work involved. “Our focus really is structural steel projects for residential and commercial construction and architectural metal work. But we are very versatile and can provide a diverse range of fabrication services, complemented with carpentry. The carpentry division also works independently of the engineering side.” With ten staff on the engineering side, and six on the building side, Allcor’s team incudes experienced and qualified tradesmen, a project manager, apprentices and labourers. “We currently have one engineering apprentice and two on the carpentry side. It is important to bring new people through to maintain a succession pathway. One of our past engineering apprentices, Jordan, has now been with us for six years. I took Jordan on when I was more on the tools. Of course, I haven’t been on the tools for a while now and if we were having a fabrication competition he would beat me hands down. It’s good to see your young people getting better and overtaking the master, so to speak.” Operating throughout Dunedin, Allcor Fabrication’s reach includes Central Otago and freights finished product as far north as Auckland. Allcor’s key customer sectors include the other engineering businesses around Dunedin, Dunedin airport – especially on the carpentry side – tier one construction companies, forestry, group home building companies, transport, and food manufacturing. Over the last eight years the company has accumulated a diverse range of general engineering machinery including welders, polishing equipment, drill presses, a 60 tonne punch and shear machine, a large hydraulic band saw for structural steel work, and CNC plasma cutting capability. A recently purchased a crane truck with a 22 metre reach that is capable of lifting 6-tonne in close, and 860-kilos at full reach, provides Allcor with more control over the installation of structural steel projects, and the ability to transport projects to site. But it is a Durma CNC Press Brake with a 3.7 metre/175 tonne folding capacity, that takes centre stage and allows Allcor to provide limited one-off runs or large production runs with each sheet requiring intricate folds. “The Press brake is constantly busy and a lot of that work is for most of the other engineering companies in Dunedin,” explains Nick. “They may not have the in-house capability to complete some of the intricate and complex folds. One of our team members, Richard Sherson, is a skilled operator with over 30 years’ experience in press braking. “Richard is such an asset to the company, and the reason why so many businesses come to us. He is just so clued up on how to operate the machine and the various tricks you can do with it. He is a master craftsman.” Reflecting on the success of the diverse business, Nick says while the team is relatively small, it is a quality and skilled team that complement each other. “We’re committed to each and every project we undertake and ensure that the product we put out is also of a very high standard so that at the end we have a happy client. That’s what really matters.” Dress your business When you dress your business with Apparelmaster, we take care of everything!
