BUILDING David Reid Homes Canterbury A Christchurch home built by David Reid Homes Canterbury has picked up a gold at this year’s Canterbury Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. This one-of-a-kind design and build at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Casebrook needed a creative approach to fit the unusual street-facing site. The 256m2 home was designed in conjunction with the architect and owners. Director of Construction Carl Fordyce explains, “It was a challenging section that required two outdoor living areas. It had to stand out while maximising sunlight. This was achieved through high windows below the oversized mono-pitch roof overhang to create a wow factor.” The build utilised Resene plaster, brick, James Hardie stria board, and picture frame flashing details. The judges were impressed with the design details of the home. “The large clerestory windows throughout the living areas mean there is light filling the home constantly and great indoor-outdoor flow. The kitchen, with a feature concrete benchtop, has a clever slide back door to the wall oven, giving an overall sleek appearance when closed.” The well-fitted out scullery offers easy access to plenty of storage, fridges and a separate sink. Additionally, a warm, moody snug off the living areas provides a space for pure relaxation. “The luxurious fully tiled bathroom and ensuite complete the package to make this another outstanding David Reid Homes build.” Carl said that what set the property apart was bringing together four different claddings to complement the design rather than confuse it. The garage and workshop area allow for the client’s “passion for petrol power.” The team worked closely with Hierarchy Group architects on the Casebrook home to transform the client’s brief to reality, demonstrating their understanding of the client’s vision from the start. There were minimal challenges throughout the project as expectations were transparent from the beginning, Carl said. “Preconstruction setup on a project like this is critical to the execution.” Having the owners present at the awards evening was a highlight, showcasing the satisfaction of all parties involved, he said. “It has given the whole team the opportunity to see what we can achieve. They should be proud of this award as recognition of the attention to detail and old-fashioned hard work paying off.” “It is an award in the Canterbury region that people expect from David Reid Homes, so it was fantastic to meet those expectations.” While this was the franchise’s first-time entry, David Reid Homes has a long history of results, with four homes advancing to the National House of the Year Awards this year. David Reid Homes was started in Canterbury in 1993, initially growing throughout the South Island and later expanded to the North Island. The company has since grown to have 18 individual franchise operators. The predominant focus is on design and build for clients, Carl said. “Our point of difference is the emphasis on architecturally designed bespoke homes for clients who want something tailored to their lifestyle and their site.” “Our franchise owners are familiar with their areas and concentrate on designing homes that suit the location and climate. The majority of homes we build are custom-designed.” Proudly supporting David Reid Homes Canterbury i i DYERS ROAD awardwinner Hierarchy Group are proud to have designed this home built by David Reid Homes and congratulate them for winning a Master Builders Gold Award.
