24 | Wānaka move right one for firm Moving the company from Timaru to Wānaka has proved a revelation for Adam Shackleton. Wānaka: Shackleton Building T T Ange Davidson REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Moving his building company from Timaru to Wānaka in 2021 was an inspired move for owner operator Adam Shackleton who believes the lakeside town has a bright future for the building industry. “Wanaka really is the land of opportunity for construction. It’s the place to go and make it happen. It’s good for your career as you’re exposed to all levels of work from building a deck to a high-end architectural build,” believes Adam. The team has recently completed a modern architecturally designed home in Wānaka’s Pearl Lane. With a unique design and layout, the build was challenging and hugely rewarding. The 333m2 property maximises the spectacular views with large raked ceilings throughout and features an internal courtyard, expansive deck and large modern windows which look over the clean, minimal landscaping. The build’s schist work was a great opportunity for Adam and his team to work alongside some of the other talented tradesmen in Wanaka. “The house put to the test all that we’ve learnt over the years and we’re really pleased with the outcome. We’re getting through a lot of work in Wānaka and we’re being recognised for this,” says Adam. Another recent project was providing the carpentry for 24 serviced apartments for Aspiring Lifestyle Retirement Village. The mostly one-bedroom apartments have floor areas ranging from 50m² to 96m² with 2.7 metre ceilings and large doors opening out to a patio. The crew worked alongside Christchurch construction company Envision Eighty20 and the Wanaka based team, We Built It. Adam employs eight talented waged staff and uses contractors to supplement any bigger jobs. Staffing hasn’t been an issue as there are plenty of experienced builders in the area. For some of the large-scale projects, Adam contracted builders from abroad through a Wānaka company who supply labour hire. “They’ve helped us out a few times and the guys have slotted into our team really well. We’re lucky to have great staff coming through the ranks, including two young apprentices plus we’ve recently welcomed a new foreman,” he says. “We have an awesome team of tradespeople who bring their skills and attention to detail on every project. It is also a bit of a family business as my brother lends his skills to the construction team and my sister looks after the admin and accounting side.” Adam’s current project is his own house at Lake Hawea. The high-end build is a family home using steel, timber and brick, and clad in timber both inside and out with large modern windows. “The workmanship is awesome!” enthuses Adam. “My background is in residential housing so it has been a great opportunity to pull together all our favourite ideas from past projects. I’ve been lucky to work on some beautiful homes since shifting to Wānaka. We don’t limit our work to any particular architect, but we do focus is on the middle to high end homes. We can help with the construction and renovation of any space and that includes plenty of renovation work and decking.” Adam’s vision for Shackleton Building is to stay busy, specialise in challenging high-end houses and to keep his customers and his team happy. “We want to have consistent work and my goal is to build amazing houses throughout the region. We also want our family and team to be able enjoy the lifestyle that Wānaka offers, because that’s why we moved into the region,” he says.
