We can build to a plan, source and lay materials through our own quarry joint venture, and we have people to do the work. You can’t do the business without the people.” T T to page 28 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tier one civil construction company Fulton Hogan is celebrating ninety years in business, with the Southland branch contributing to its ongoing successful operation since the 1980s. Bringing over twenty years’ experience in civil construction to the table, Paul Jamison has been Southland Regional Manager for just on 12 months, having come from a divisional manager’s role in the company’s Dunedin operation. He says when the opportunity came along to take the next step up the ladder he seized the day, embracing both the opportunity and the challenges it would bring. “As Regional Manager I have a certain amount of autonomy to make local decisions and quickly respond to issues or opportunities. As a business, we can facilitate an end-to-end solution, so our customers, clients and the community can have confidence in our products and the services we provide. We can build to a plan, source and lay materials through our own quarry joint venture, and we have people to do the work. You can’t do the business without the people.” Employing a team of 130 staff across a diverse range of roles, Fulton Hogan Southland operates out of Invercargill, looking after the broader Southland region, as well as Gore district. The business also maintains a team in Stewart Island undertaking road maintenance activities for the Southland District Council, as part of a wider roading contract. “Our core customer sector is predominantly local authorities, including Southland District Council, Invercargill City Council and Gore District Council. “We also work for Waka Kotahi, Rio Tinto at Tiwai Smelter and Invercargill Airport. Road corridor maintenance along with asphalt and chip seal resurfacing is a core business activity for us, as is three waters renewals and capital projects for local authorities. We’re currently supporting our national construction team with a significant flood mitigation pump station.” As Paul observes, people are always a company’s greatest asset and there are plenty of people in the Southland team who have clocked up lengthy service records. “We have a couple of staff who are reaching thirty years this year. There are about forty staff in the zero to two year range, forty-five in the two - ten year range and another thirty five in the ten years and beyond range. “So there’s a very nice split between newbies, people who are establishing their careers, and our ‘go-to’ subject matter experts who become mentors and role models for the younger ones. There are twenty-one women across the Southland team, including office/ administration, with thirteen working in field operations teams. “We’ve seen an increase in the number of women in the traffic management space, and we’re looking to employ more female staff. Most of our staff come from in and around Invercargill, so we’re a substantial employer for the region.” Roles range from general labourers, surfacing specialists in asphalt and sealing, three-waters operators, specialist plant operators, drivers, and traffic management staff. With its own mechanic and engineering workshops, fitters, welders and mechanics are also employed. The team is complemented with civil construction workers including carpenters who work with concrete and concrete structures, and there are road maintenance staff and road marking teams.
