What was once considered waste in previous years is now transformed into three valuable products: fish meal, fish oil, and fish organics for fertiliser. Reducing waste and finding alternatives to plastic is a key focus at Talley’s. Leon says there has been a shift away from using polystyrene chilly bins. “We’re using fully recyclable cardboard chilled boxes as an alternative.” Talley’s actively participates in various initiatives that align with its dedication to sustainable fisheries and marine ecosystems. One notable example is the company’s sponsorship of a bi-annual coastal clean-up on Stewart Island. “We have an incredible team of employees who enthusiastically take part in these cleanups, and we not only encourage their involvement but also cover their expenses. “ Additionally, we are in the process of finalising a new sponsorship program aimed at placing rubbish bins on additional beaches, further contributing to the preservation of clean coastlines.” Leon encourages young people to explore the exciting opportunities that are available to them at Talley’s. Having joined the company at the age of 16 in 1989, he never looked back. “From a young age, I learned that by consistently showing up and putting in hard work, you will undoubtedly be presented with opportunities within this organisation. “Your dedication to the job gets recognised and rewarded. I began my journey here without any academic qualifications, but I progressed by gaining knowledge on the factory floor. “Many of our senior managers have similar stories. Even one of my own children now works here too, in sales. For ambitious young individuals fresh out of school, there are great career prospects here, and we still offer cadetships. “In fact, there are fantastic opportunities for anyone, regardless of age, as long as they demonstrate commitment, show up to work every day, and give their best effort.” Leon says that where possible, Talley’s likes to promote within the existing team to fill more senior roles. “A significant number of our current supervisors and managers in the inshore processing division have attained their roles through internal progression at Talley’s. “Your dedication to the job gets recognised and rewarded. I began my journey here without any academic qualifications, but I progressed by gaining knowledge on the factory floor.” “However, considering the diverse range of positions we offer, we make a deliberate effort to attract external candidates, recognising the value that fresh ideas and expertise bring to our business. “As they progress, we provide them with personal development training to enhance their skills, such as conflict management, comprehensive health and safety knowledge, and T T Fishing sustainably - page 38 effective leadership principles.” Leon says Talley’s places importance on contributing and is actively engaged in supporting the communities in which they operate. “We are involved in lots of local events, fundraisers, and activities and we love it!” Talley’s Group - Nelson SEAFOOD INDUSTRY South Pacific Turbochargers Ltd is your one stop solution for all your turbocharger requirements.
