38 | T T Richard Loader Sustainability underpins approach to trawling Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Dr Jeremy Helson: “New Zealand is renowned for, and committed to, sustainable fishing.” This is the time of year when New Zealand’s seafood processors are starting to process this season’s harvest from New Zealand’s largest fishery – hoki. Hoki are an important source of healthy seafood, and one of New Zealand’s most important commercial trawling catches. It is also a sustainable catch – New Zealand’s wild hoki fishery is certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Dr Jeremy Helson says that people can be confident they are making a responsible choice in New Zealand wild-caught fish. “Sustainable fishing means three things. First, fishers must leave enough fish so the population can stay healthy while the people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods and New Zealanders can benefit from a supply of healthy, tasty protein. “Secondly, fishing activity is managed carefully, strictly even, so that other species and habitats within the ecosystem remain healthy. That includes minimising our carbon footprint, something fishing does much better than many other methods of food production, as evidenced in new research from AgResearch and many global scientific studies. “And lastly, fisheries must comply with New Zealand law and regulations, and there are many of these. This means we can be confident about our fishing, and that includes bottom trawling. New Zealand is renowned for, and committed to, sustainable fishing and bottom trawling is our most common commercial fishing method,” Dr Helson says.
