| 53 Since buying Reefton Crane and Construction, rebranding it by adding (2021) to the name to signify a brand-new beginning, owners Paul and Jody have steadily grown and expanded the company’s capability, purchasing new machinery and upskilling their team. Re ecting on the Reefton based business they have now owned for over two years, the couple acknowledge that it is hard to de ne in just a few words the speci c nature of their operation. Paul makes the point that the range of machinery and the diversity of projects makes the West Coast based business so much more than just a crane company. Operating from their Gannons Road base in Reefton, Paul and Jody have assembled a diverse array of machinery and vehicles to tackle the diversity of projects and complemented with their multi-skilled team. Included in Reefton Crane and Construction’s line up of highly specialised machines are four mobile cranes for hire to suit the smallest to biggest project. From a 125-tonne maximum lift capacity to 25-tonne maximum lift capacity, each crane hire includes a quali ed and highly skilled operator. “The larger cranes are good site cranes, whereas the 25-tonne crane is a lift and carry machine,” says Paul. “Our heavy haulage Kenworth truck is a very high-spec unit. Coupled with our hi-tech house removal trailer with remote self-steering, with several house jacks running o a mobile hydraulic power pack, the machinery makes the relocations of buildings very e cient. We also have transport and general-purpose trailers including three rows of eight heavy haulage trailer and can supply Class 1 and 2 pilots and pilot vehicles. Our two large Hi-Ab’s are great for smaller lifts, containers, and small building transportations. We have a wide range of excavators from 1.7 tonnes up to 30 tonnes and a couple of tip trucks.” A BSP piling hammer for piling I beams is used for commercial foundations and structures, retaining walls, along with minor and major bridges. “Our projects include civil construction, including roading and track work. We also o er a full range of earthworks services through our sister company Multi-Scape Ltd. We’re frequently selected to construct the foundations for cellular towers, which is quite specialised and often includes site excavation, laying the foundations and erecting the towers.” Re ecting the diversity of its capability, Reefton Crane and Construction’s (2021) customers are equally diverse ranging from the homeowner through to large businesses including Kiwirail, Ventor, BT Mining, Birch eld Coal Mining and various engineering and building rms. “We operate throughout the West Coast and Canterbury, into the Tasman and Blenheim areas and way down to Glenorchy. But business can take us to the bottom of the South Island and into the North Island.” When it comes to those special things that have made the company successful in the time that Paul and Jody have been at the helm, Paul says a passion for liaising with clients face-to-face and developing a good relationship based on trust has been key, but it is what you produce that people see. “It’s about the quality of what we do, and we strive to do things right the rst time — that is what our reputation has been built on.” Growing capabilities on the Coast Your dedicated experts on the West Coast, Canterbury and Marlborough for house removals, crane and hi-ab hire, cartage services and construction including piling and foundations.
