ENGINEERING Nestled within the small rural service town of Mosgiel, family owned and operated PW Engineering Ltd (PWE) has evolved from its humble beginnings over thirty years ago to deliver its clients with ‘ideas to reality’, turn-key solutions. PWE is now a significant player in the design, fabrication and installation of large-scale multi-million dollar equipment for the primary industry throughout New Zealand. “PWE started off as a three-man operation in the early ‘90s, providing engineering maintenance support to the primary industry, including meat processing and the timber industry,” says Operations Manager Nick Wharehinga, whose father Peter took full ownership of the business in 2007, and remains the company’s Managing Director. “While we have moved on from being a three-man operation, the primary industry remains our core source of work, and we have the capability and intellectual property to work with all the various sectors, including meat processing, seed, fertiliser and forestry. “Our success and growth as a business has been built on a reputation for going out of our way to ensure the success of the projects we undertake, no matter what the issue, and having the capability to deliver a turn-key solution. “We will pull out all stops to maintain the client relationship, and that approach has led to very lengthy relationships with clients like Ravensdown.” From its large Mosgiel site, PWE operates from four large independent buildings, including three manufacturing workshops and a design office, enabling the business to undertake the large-scale projects that it has become exceptionally proficient at delivering. The PWE team currently stands at forty, including a large fabrication team, a machine shop team and, comparative to the total team size, there is a large design team. “Realistically, our points of difference are our design capability, and site installation capability. Being able to undertake the largescale industrial projects that we do really does come down to having that substantial design capability. “With our design capability we are also doing a lot of contract design work, selling the concepts and 3D design as a standalone service. Quite simply, PWE provides an end-toend service for our clients, and that service is to bring the clients ideas to reality.” The journey from ideas to reality commences when the clients presents PWE with a problem to be solved, at which time a senior design manager will work with the client to understand the problem and what the client wants to achieve. That might sometimes necessitate a site visit. “Often the client will bring in their own concept sketch to describe what they are after,” says Nick. “There are always limitations to what can be achieved and these need to be worked through with the client, but we will present a variety of concepts to the client, with a range of prices. T T to page 56 “Once agreement is reached on which option the client prefers, the concept is transformed into working drawings, which are then provided to the workshop and machine shop for fabrication.
