94 | ARCHITECTURE Iconic Architecture T T Kim Newth Practice has deep roots in Canterbury “We have done everything from ultra-modern townhouses through to very classic homes with steep pitched roofing and gable ends.” Iconic Architecture is a well-established practice with a respected track record in the residential and commercial markets that extends well beyond its base of operations in rural North Canterbury. Founder Andrew Toulson, whose studio is in Fernside near Rangiora, says the practice portfolio spans all of Canterbury and beyond. “We’ve done projects as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill, but we mostly cover the Selwyn district and up to the Hurunui.” Having started his design career as an architectural draughting cadet with the Christchurch City Council in 1980, Andrew’s depth of local experience is considerable. He’s worked in private practice since 1992 and lived in the Waimakariri district for more than 40 years. It would be fair to say he has made a lasting impression in the local area, with his design work including memorable projects such as Conway Lane in Rangiora. “That was our first big commercial project; I was the designer and put the project to the Waimakariri District Council, following it through to building consent and working with the project manager. We specifically kept it to the scale and character of Rangiora’s town centre as that was an important priority.” Working with some of the region’s best new home builders is also fulfilling for Andrew and his clients. For example, one project with leading Rangiora-based builder Simon Banks was a Gold Reserve Finalist and Gold Award winner in the Registered Master Builder Canterbury House of the Year ($1m-2m category) Awards in 2019. “All the builders I work with are great. They are easy to deal with and we have strong professional relationships. In the Waimakariri, I have established good connections with the local council and building consent officers as well – I find them very approachable. Projects go much easier when you can work effectively with your local networks.” Adding value to projects and delivering excellent yet affordable service is what it’s all about for Andrew and his team, whether it’s for a new home, an alteration, addition, or light commercial project. The starting point on every project is the budget. For Andrew, it provides clarity from the outset and informs what’s achievable. “Once that has been resolved, I like to work through clients’ ideas – if it’s for a new home, • Residential New Builds • Alterations & Renovations • Design & Planning • Project Management • Commercial Construction From new construction projects to renovations you can trust DGI Morgan Ltd for reliable, turnkey construction solutions. 021 198 1216 admin@dgimorgan.co.nz www.dgimorgan.co.nz Here at D.G.I.
