Lake Brunner Builder | Ken Drummond Lockwood offers value and variety The company became an official Lockwood Homes agent for the West Coast two years ago. BUILDING T T Rosa Watson A move into building Lockwood Homes has opened up exciting new opportunities for West Coast-based construction company Lake Brunner Builder | Ken Drummond. The company became an official Lockwood Homes agent for the West Coast two years ago, and is now completing its second Lockwood build. Owner Ken Drummond says Lockwood homes offer a safe and durable building option – proven during the Christchurch earthquakes. “Only one Lockwood was damaged, and that was only because a rock came through it,” he says. The company’s current build at Lake Kaniere is nearing completion, and planning is underway for another Lockwood home on a dairy farm in Reefton, designed as staff accommodation. Ken has also noted a growing demand for granny flats and studio units, with Lockwood’s smaller spec plans offering an ideal solution. “There’s going to be more of those 60sqm units going up,” he says. These smaller homes provide opportunities for intergenerational living, which is becoming more common as housing costs rise. “It’s so hard for young people to get their first home. They’re better off to share the land and put in a small unit,” Ken says. Through its partnership with Lockwood Homes, the company can now cater to a wide range of needs, from high-end, luxury new builds to modest, customisable kitset homes. “A lot of elderly people have built Lockwood and had a long association with Lockwood,” Ken says, noting the brand’s loyal customer base. The team at Lake Brunner Builder | Ken Drummond is enjoying the challenge and variety that comes with building Lockwood homes. “We have a very confident, skilled building team – two LBP builders and one fully qualified builder,” Ken says. But there’s plenty more to the company than just building Lockwoods – it also builds conventional builds and is a kitset building provider for kitset home company Coast to Coast Homes, which has a wide range of kitset home plans, and is the West Coast agent for both Pro Vista Glass Balustrades and Vinyl Cladding NZ. In addition to new builds, the Ken Drummond team also handles renovations, re-cladding, and bathroom and kitchen installations, adding further versatility to their services. “They’re a bit different – you get to think outside the square a bit,” Ken says. The business has also expanded into building high-quality pole sheds, particularly for lifestyle properties. These include roller doors, full cladding and rodent-proofing, and can be customised to client specifications. After years of working alongside large housing companies in the early stages of the business, Ken chose to move into the private space and build his own team. Having worked for himself since completing his apprenticeship, Ken brings over 30 years of experience and a focus on affordability, knowledge, and sustainability. “Our approach to building is grounded in our core values. By staying up to date with the latest building practices and techniques, we can offer our clients the best possible service.” Ken sees a real need for more housing on the Coast, with a current shortfall of around 280 homes. “We need more subdivisions to make up the shortfall, and I’d like to see it made easier to develop land so this can happen.” Despite the ups and downs of the industry, the business continues to grow, with new projects keeping the future bright.
