Preserving and strengthening history is a team effort Contact caledoniagroup.com.au 03-2700060 022 340 0887 bwalsh@calnz.co.nz Brendan Walsh Operations Manager aledonia Group NZ were engaged to give support to our valued client Breen construction for the Waitaki Boys High project. Caledonia Group ensured safe and complete access for the skilled teams to undertake this special project. Waitaki Boys High School’s historic Hall of Memories will carry on being a well known landmark for many years to come. Caledonia Group designed full perimeter access to the specialist glazing both inside and out, to assist in its removal. This was to mitigate any vibration damage that could take place during the core drilling phase. This sca old required a very soft and well-planned approach, due to the importance of this heritage glazing; virtually irreplaceable. Complete perimeter safe working platform was installed for roof replacement. This required some speci c detailing for the work required to be done. Allowing for the step pitch, heritage slated roof cladding, for the installation of new seismic upgrade structural steel into the perimeter wall plates. This platform had staircase access to all elevations, two loading bays and full access onto the gables roof. The safe platform had to follow the steep roof angle giving access to remove wall caps, core drilling, & seismic rods being installed from the top down into the foundation. During the project the entire building needed to be protected from the elements with a temporary roof structure. This required a design change and consideration due to being a high wind zone and the proximity and high volume pedestrian foot tra c nearby. Part of the solution Caledonia Group opted to install a rolling roof system removing the use of a crane and mitigating risk and possible disruptions to the school Pupils and sta . To access the underside of the ceiling we used an internal birdcage style sca old, to act as a catch fan for workers above the ceiling installing seismic bracing, structural plywood. And to access the underside of the beautiful exposed roof beams for staining, plus the installation of the re system upgrades. All sca olds during the project were built by our skilled Timaru based tradesmen. Designed by our in-house engineering department, with 3rd party sign o by a local engineering rm. Caledonia Group NZ South Island branch is very proud to be chosen and trusted contractor of choice. To oversee the access and containment requirements on this challenging and very important heritage project was immensely rewarding for all the teams involved. Truly a beautiful building that the lucky students, sta and good people of Oamaru can enjoy and admire for many years to come. C
