14 | Trucking firm plays key role in regional economy Hilton Haulage has completed seven acquisitions during the past three year T T from page 12 Hilton Haulage REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT “We are a major local employer and economic contributor, supporting not only direct roles in transport and logistics, but also a wide network of subcontractors, service providers, and industry partners. As a long-term player in the region, Hilton Haulage has become part of Timaru’s commercial fabric.” As the transport and logistics sector undergoes rapid transformation, Hilton Haulage is embracing smart logistics. It has steadily invested in systems, compliance frameworks and operational technologies to meet the increasing demands of modern supply chains, including optimised routing software, driver-safety enhancements and robust fleet- maintenance protocols. An example is the full rollout of Guardian, a driver fatigue and distraction monitoring system that uses in-cab AI-powered cameras to detect early signs of tiredness or inattention. When fatigue is identified, alerts such as seat vibrations and audio warnings are triggered, while a 24/7 live support centre is notified in real-time, a proactive approach that safeguards both drivers and road users. “Fatigue doesn’t just come from long hours. It can stem from life outside the cab – anything from sleep apnoea to a newborn at home,” says Scott. Hilton Haulage’s sustainability initiatives includes trialling and deploying lower-emission solutions across its fleet, including electric pumps for milk collection, eliminating the need to burn diesel while transferring product, and a battery-powered container truck. “These initiatives contribute to meaningful reductions in emissions and fuel costs, reinforcing the company’s intent to lead responsibly, not just efficiently.” Further strengthening its nationwide presence, Hilton Haulage has completed seven acquisitions during the past three years, including the recent purchase of Nelson-based Austin Transport Services, extending its network into Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough as part of its future-focused strategy. Investing in training, apprenticeships, and career pathways that support long-term employment in the region is also a key part of this strategy. “We are really blessed to have so many long-serving staff. Some have been with us 10, 20, even 30 years. I think that kind of loyalty speaks volumes about the culture we’ve built here,” Scott says. “In many ways, the relationship is symbiotic; just as Timaru enables Hilton’s growth, Hilton’s presence reinforces the region’s reputation as a smart place to do business.” The company’s impact extends well beyond its fleet operations. Hilton Haulage actively supports local organisations, events, and charities, from sponsoring grassroots sports teams to participating in regional development forums, with the company seeing considerable value in staying engaged and visible at a community level. “Hilton Haulage is proud to be part of a region that’s not only growing, but helping to shape the future of business across New Zealand,” says Scott. “Timaru isn’t just where we started – it’s where our future continues to be built.” Proud to supply New Vehicles to Hilton Haulage Timaru Motors 207 Hilton Highway | Timaru P 03 687 4133 | timarumotors.co.nz Lusk Engineering are proud to be associated with bulk cartage units for Hilton Haulage, in the past and future builds. 03 308 2410 admin@luskeng.co.nz
